World Cup Draw – were we lucky?
“My dream comes true! I’ll play in World Cup Tournament, versus Germany and additionally in Dortmund! Coool!”
It’s first reaction after World Cup Draw made by 25-year old Ebi Smolarek, top goal scorer of Borussia Dortmund. He knows Borussia’s stadium much better than any other World Cup players.
Indeed, group A consisting of Germany, Costarica, Ecuador and Poland is definetelly not a ‘group of death’ so that our chances to qualify to “knockout stages” seem to be high.
Though Polish national team have never won with Germany in World Cup Tournament (in 1974 we lost Final in the famous ‘match on the water’), it is said to be a rare occasion to do so this time.
In November 2005, Ecuador lost with Poland in Barcelona (3:0) but one may say that it was played not on a pitch but rather on a lake so that the result mat not be treated seriously at all.
Costarica is a big question tag for us. We have never played with the team so Paweł Janas has plenty information to gather about them. Anyway, there 2 out of 3 matches to win!
Artur Boruc, the Bhoys’ first goalkeeper told FIFAworldcup.com: “People will look at our group and think ‘OK, Germany will qualify there for sure’. But look at the European Championship. Who expected Greece to beat France and go on to win the trophy??. Well, he’s kind of right…
To sum up, World Cup Qualifications has shown national team coach-Paweł Janas succeeded in building strong, well cooperating team but as always you need bit of luck to achieve anything in Word Cup tournament. On the other hand it’s always better not to compete as a leader.
We’re lucky then to have Germany in our group!
