Wisla Krakow-FC Barcelona 1:0. A Confidence Booster.

August 27th, 2008 | By: tomasz | 5 Comments »

Wisla Krakow made history yesterday as they became the first Polish club to defeat the mighty FC Barcelona. At least they came out of the draw with something after losing the first game 0:4. The win is even more valuable when we consider the fact that the Catalans played their strongest squad possible (apart from Leo Messi). Congratulations to Maciej Skorza and the guys.

Wisla Krakow-FC Barcelona 1:0 (Cleber 52′)
Wisla: Mariusz Pawelek - Peter Singlar, Marcin Baszczynski, Cleber, Piotr Brozek - Wojciech Lobodzinski (82. Patryk Malecki), Junior Diaz, Tomas Jirsak, Rafal Boguski (68. Andrzej Niedzielan), Marek Zienczuk (90. Tomasz Dawidowski) - Pawel Brozek

Not a lot of people expected such a result, especially that Wisla played without three important first team players: Glowacki, Cantoro and Sobolewski. Wisla’s play exceeded expectations; they were an organised team, put pressure on Barcelona, were able to carry out some interesting offensive plays and counter attacks. Of course Barca had more from the game, they should have scored at least three times, but it just wasn’t their day. It would be unfair to write that it was only a friendly for them, but they didn’t give their best until conceding a goal. Who should be singled out for praise in Wisla? First of all Marcin Baszczynski, who put in a great performance even though he played out of position. Maybe central defence is the position for him to end his career at? Secondly Piotr Brozek, of whom noone expected to be a good enough defender to stop Barcelona’s attacks. This is the game where Piotr Brozek proved that he must be considered a candidate for the nt, especially considering our problems at left back. As for players called up for WC qualifiers; a good game from Pawel Brozek, who posed threat to Barcelona’s defence throughout 90 minutes, and average performances from Lobodzinski and Boguski, who weren’t exactly the driving force behind Wisla’s attacks. Pawelek’s performance was a mixture of great saves and stupid mistakes. The history has been made, but in all honesty this performance is nothing but a huge confidence booster before 1st round UEFA Cup games. I hope Wisla players will be able to build on that.

The only goal of the game

Did anyone find watchable highlights from the game?

yeah, i think the same about piotr brożek, he really was classy yesterday. if he can keep the concentration and determination in other games, our lb problem can be solved surprisingly well.
baszczu was magnificent, a worrior. together with szingler, he shone in the game on the rigth side of the pitch.
but there was also junior diaz, whom i consider a better dm than cantoro. good decision making, bold, and agile. with brozek on the left back, he can stay in the midfield.

disappoitnig performance from łobo and boguski. not the best signal for our nt:/

Well, it’s nice to have some good news. Winning, even by a single goal, is something to be proud of against Barca playing in Europe. Good for Brozek as well.

This was a very proud day for Polish football.

I watched the game and I think one of the broadcasters mentioned that Eto’s annual salary is more than that of all the players in the orange ekstraklasa combined.

A big congratulations to Maciej Skorza. I hope that he can build a reputation as one of the better managers in football. Considering his age, the future looks promising. A potential replacement for Beenhakker down the line?

I liked that they were able to play a more fluent style with some kind of passing game.

In Barcelona, the team looking kind of shell shocked. Barca kept pressing with success forcing Wisla to make dumb passes. I guess the atmosphere got the better of them. Thank God it was a different story on our turf.

This was very good experience for Brozek, Lobodzinski, and Boguski. Playing against world class players never hurts and will only raise their level of play. This was a big confidence boost for them getting ready for the qualifiers.

“Be Champions.”

Piotr Brozek was supposed to be the weakest link in Wisla’s defence, a natural winger (he even started his career as a striker) who plays as a left back by accident, but he proved everybody wrong. A couple of good displays in the UEFA Cup and Leo will have to call him up. As for Skorza, the best thing is that we can easily see his influence on the pitch. The team is organised tactically and doesn’t leave much to pure luck or chaos as a lot of Polish teams do. Currently we can say the same only about Smuda’s Lech.
