Will Leo Axe Boruc And Zewlakow?
Strange info was provided yesterday by Dziennik. Apparently, Artur Boruc and Michal Zewlakow won’t get call ups for our June games against South Africa and Iraq. They will pay for their detrimental performances against Northern Ireland and make space for other players. Are Dziennik journalists to be trusted?
I think we have to approach this news carefully, it’s only speculation after all. However, I wouldn’t be much surprised if Boruc was left out. He is the player who is most responsible for our two losses in the qualifiers and it seems perfectly logical that Lukasz Fabianski should be given an extended run in the team, at least until the Holy Goalie fully recovers from his emotional problems. Judging from his latest performances for Celtic, he’s on a good way to do that. I don’t think there’s a need to include Boruc as a backup keeper as it is hard for me to imagine him accepting this role. Let’s stick to Fabianski for the time being and give a chance to Lukasz Zaluska or Sebastian Przyrowski in one of the games. Zewlakow’s case is a bit different. Yes, he was awful against Northern Ireland (who wasn’t?), but he’s usually one of the most reliable players in the team. He’s our captain and has just won the Greek championship with Olympiakos. I would really hesitate to let go of him as he can still be a good asset to the team. I can imagine not calling him up for the friendlies, but only when Leo clearly states that he’s waiting for Zewlak in September’s qualifying games and just wants to test other options out. The article from Dziennik suggests that Tomasz Jodlowiec is going to get a chance. A good move if you ask me, Jodla should at last be tested against a quality opponent (both South Africa and Iraq will both participate in the Confederations Cup). What I wouldn’t like to see is sacrificing Zewlakow for the sake of it.
Other news: Some of you may already know that Robert Lewandowski was watched by Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. The Germans may be willing to pay up to 3M€ for Lewy, but Lech is reluctant to sell him in the summer transfer window. Hernan Rengifo is more likely to leave Kolejorz as he still hasn’t signed a new contract with Lech.
Magic Zurawski’s contract ends after this season, hence more and more speculation about where he’s going to play next term. Wisla wanted the player to return to Krakow, but it seems that they’ll have problems with satisfying Zuraw’s financial demands. Austria Vienna and Atromitos Athens are listed as possible destinations.

(continuing from previous comment)
Is football really the most popular sport in Poland? Weird, I always thought it would be winter sports and martial arts (the former due to a Polish ski jumper being the best of all time, the later due to Polish succes at the Olympics with sports like judo, and the world boxing champion is a Pole if I’m not mistaken. Also isn’t there a Polish driver in Formula 1?)
Still, that’s nothing really to worry about IMO. It’s better to have a well-balanced team with players playing in good leagues willing to play for their country, than loads of world class players that have attitude problems. Look at Greece in 2004: None of the players were world class, yet they managed to win it, due to hard work, heart and dedication. I would love seeing Poland do the same in 2012, if the Netherlands fail AGAIN.

goose, you didn’t offend. I was just trying to clarify that I wasn’t whining. I understand what you’re saying, its just most other’s don’t give smaller leagues the time of day. Like someone else said, if you ain’t Man U, you ain’t nobody. And with the world cup happening once every four years, its hard for there to be big strides in different teams winning, so just making it there should be an accomplishment. But for some reason, people only point out the winners of prior tournaments. They rarely may a big deal about how a Trinidad and Tobago team even made it to the big stage. That’s a victory in and of itself. And my argument uses Poland because its closest to me, but there are a number of other leagues and countries that get thrown under the bus.

I think it really would be dumb to axe Boruc. He was without a doubt the hero of euro 2008, and deserves a lot more slack. I would try to get him back onto the national team as soon as possible so that he may rebuild his confidence and become a team leader once more. As for Zewlakow, I think we need to keep him. Frankly we just don’t have good enough defenders at the moment to replace him. Hopefully he’ll recover from his crappy games with the national team, and once more become a solid defender.

I don’t think its too bad to leave these two out of the squad for the June friendlies. If we were scheduled to play a more competitive opponent it would make sense to have these two on hand because they are two of our best players recent performances aside, but since we aren’t playing football giants it is fine to experiment a little. In the case with Zewlakow especially, to establish a young backup or two at the center-back position. He is our captain, and he can show good leadership by taking this gracefully and bringing his A game in the fall when we resume qualifiers. Boruc needs to straighten out his personal issues, and keep getting good performances on the club level so he can get back his confidence. I honestly think that when he is fit and confident he his one of the best goalies out there, he showed it at EURO 2008.
As long as Leo is not cutting these two out of the squad for good , and e keeps them in the loop with whats going on then everything will be fine.
Go Polska!

I have no objection to Zewlakow — experienced defenders are certainly an asset. But I am not so sure about labeling him ‘our captain’. The captain needs to keep it together more than all others and especially keep the team focused and in synch. I’m skeptical after N. Ireland. Please explain why you believe he’s the man. Is Zewlakow demonstrating leadership ability with Olympiakos? Will he be able to preform at his best even if he is not captain?

Also — Sorry: if Zewlakow is captain, he needs to be there for the preliminary/friendly NT games.

Okay, maybe you (Leo) don’t take away the arm band after one disastrous game. A good captain keeps his team relaxed but focuses and most all should exude (provide a strong atmosphere) of confidence. If Zewlakow can do that — great. (alright i’m finished with my rant).
Happy Flag Day and Labor Day – Have a great weekend — Go Polska!

Going back to the last thread, I have to agree with the person who suggested that Poles whine a lot. I’m constantly stunned by all the whining I see in the comments section of Polish news articles; even in an article discussing something that should make us happy, the majority of commenters seem to be striving to find some negatives.
For example, a couple months ago, I was reading an article on Bartosz Salamon that suggested he has the potential to be a world-class player. Pretty reasonable, even though he’s not a regular starter, he is getting a surprising amount of playing time for someone his age. And Italian sources have been suggesting for almost a year that he has the potential to be a star.
Instead of being happy, the majority of Polish comments was just whining and criticism along the lines of, “if he’s so good, why isn’t he already playing in Serie A” and “he’s not noteworthy at all, there’s lots of 17 year olds who are getting playing time in the first team” (that’s just false. If you look at a list of the brightest talents in Serie B, the ones in Salamon’s age group have usually not even debuted in the first team, only a couple have racked up as many minutes as he has).
This is just an example. Look at pretty much ANY article, the comments section is always dominated by negativity. If there was a World Cup of Whining, Poland would undoubtedly coast to an easy victory. Seems to be the Polish national pastime.

I can understand leaving Boruc and Zewlakow at home for these friendlies, these matches should be used to give their back-ups some much-needed experience so that they’re ready to step in if there are injuries etc. This is especially important in defense, we really need to start preparing for the future as Zewlakow is getting old. When it’s time for the qualifiers, Boruc and Zewlakow will be back in the team, I have no doubt.

Janczyk scored his 5th goal of the season today
Krzynowek got an assist in a 2-0 victory over Bochum
Go POLSKA

I think Janczyk deserves to start one of these upcoming friendlies. Lubanski is working wonders on this kid. If he keeps it up maybe some Dutch, French, or German team will pick him up. Even stay at Lokoreen anything but cska. But the russians are gonna put a pretty high price tag on him so it might be hard for him to transfer out.

I too would like to see janczyk in the NT soon, mostly because he’s a different type of an attacker than brożek and lewandowski. with all three, leo would have a range of options and we could have a strong attack for may years. but i really hope janczyk get transferred to a league better than belgium, which from the highlights seems not a long distance from our ekstraklasa. bundesliga would be perfect IMO, as there is a lot of adventurous attacking play and a very decent level, plus it’s pretty close from there to the top european clubs.
as for our veterans supposedly to be axed, i think boruc should be given a long rest, at least a few months.
żewłakow’s case is a bit different and I wouldn’t like to see leo making a scapegoat out of him. he wasn’t the only one crap against the nortern ireland, and I don’t think we have classy replacement for him. didn’t jodłowiec give wawy a penalty agains san marino last time he played?

I think Janczyk stayed too long at CSKA and he shouldn’t return there. It would be good for him to stay at Lokeren on loan for one more season and only then look at options he has. He has the potential to play in the Bundesliga or Eredivisie. I would also like to see him in the nt in the friendlies, much more than Sosin or even Sagan, who failed to score in the last 10 games or so for the Saints. However, there are rumours in Poland that Dawid Nowak from Belchatow is going to be tested. The guy is the biggest striking talent outside the top three clubs and scored six goals in the last seven games.
@gregorio
It wasn’t Jodlowiec, it was Wojtkowiak. Jodlowiec gave away a penalty against Ireland. Still, he receives so much praise from all the Ekstraklasa coaches that he should finally become a soild part of the nt or at least be given a chance to do that.

Well Fabianski played against Portsmouth today for some reason. Kept a clean sheet, but did make a few mistakes.

Apparently a Brazilian with a Polish passport, Marcelo Dluzniewski is about to sign a four-year contract with Steau Bucharest. AS Roma, Bolton and Everton have also been keeping tabs on him. He was born October 13, 1989 and plays as a midfielder.

Speaking of passports, apparently Obraniak still needs to submit a couple more documents proving his grandfather’s Polish origin… I don’t understand why the President doesn’t just approve his citizenship, we need him desperately for the NT and it’s obvious Obraniak has Polish roots, why are they making him go through this never-ending saga…
