Who’s Hot, Who’s Not? Goalkeepers.
Which players should the next coach keep? Which players we can count on with Euro 2012 in perspective? Who should we dispose of? These are the questions that the Polish fans have been asking themselves for the last week. We’re not building a team for the remaining qualifiers, 2010 or 2011. We need a team for 2012. Who’s up to the task?
I’ll start my Euro 2012 squad analysis with the goalkeepers that were called up for the most recent games (plus Tomasz Kuszczak). Which players should the new coach bet on?
Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow, 32 yrs in 2012): the Holy Goalie will be still young enough to participate for the nr 1 blouse in 2012. The requirements? He needs to maintain the current form for Celtic and improve his performances for the national team. Artie is no longer irreplaceable, he lost us two games in the recent qualifiers. Other keepers have to put more pressure on him and make him fight hard for the starting spot. It seems unlikely that his club status will change in the next three years.
Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal London, 27 yrs in 2012): a great talent, but a one that can’t flourish in recent years. He was expected to win a starting position at Arsenal the second season he was there, but it seems that he’ll warm the bench for a third consecutive year. If he remains the nr 2 at his club I can’t see him as our first keeper at Euros, he’ll always be inferior to Boruc in this department. The easiest solution is to prove better than Almunia, but I’m afraid that Arsene Wenger is treating Fabian just as a reliable backup. May have to move clubs in order to be a real competition for Artie.
Lukasz Zaluska (Celtic Glasgow, 30 yrs in 2012): a reliable keeper, but as long as he’s Boruc’s backup at Celtic he has absolutely no chance of obtaining the nr 1 blouse in the national team. It all depends on how far his ambition reaches; he may be happy with his current situation (2nd at Celtic, 3rd in Poland) since three seasons ago he couldn’t even find himself a place to play in Poland. I predict that he’ll be fed up with warming the bench after two seasons and will move to some other SPL or Championship club. Then he’ll have a chance to be in the squad for Euro 2012.
Sebastian Przyrowski (Polonia Warsaw, 31 yrs in 2012): should have left the Ekstraklasa or at least move to one of the three top Polish clubs a long time ago. He’s still one of the best Polish goalies in the Ekstraklasa, but playing for Polonia won’t give him any international experience whatsoever. The newspapers are selling him each transfer window (Red Bull Salzburg, Tottenham etc.), but apparently there’s no serious offer on the table (or maybe he’s overpriced). Not good enough to be our nr 1, he’ll struggle to win a place in the 2012 squad if his club situation doesn’t improve.
Tomasz Kuszczak (Manchester United, 30 yrs in 2012): a victim of his own ambition, Kuszczak doesn’t stand a chance to be called up to the national team as United’s nr 3 keeper. I think he’s good enough to find himself a decent club in Europe, but he prefers to follow his dream at United (as he says, it’s better to drive Mercedes once rather than Maluch ten times). His chances of playing in 2012 will depend on how soon he becomes disillusioned with his situation at Manchester. Still, even if he changes clubs I think that the nr 3 in the national team is the highest he can obtain.
Wojciech Szczesny (Arsenal London, 22 yrs in 2012): everybody concerned claim that he’s an exceptional talent and judging from the video highlights they’re not far from truth. Szczesny is the starting keeper for our U21, but only a fourth keeper at Arsenal (with Almunia and Fabianski injured it was Mannone who started against Standard yesterday). Regardless of the talent, I don’t think any coach will call him up with his current squad status at the Gunners. I also don’t believe that he’ll advance to become the nr 1 keeper in three years time, it just doesn’t happen in big clubs (not in England at least, Casillas and Victor Valdes went through their clubs youth training in Spain). He needs to play some senior football somewhere to be able to compete for the place in the Euro 2012 squad.
As you can see, I don’t think that any of the goalies called up by Leo should be written off at this stage. Goalkeepers can play until they’re almost forty so the age is not a decisive factor in this case. Apart from Szczesny, they’re no new, talented goalies to be seriously considered at the moment. Bartosz Bialkowski is warming the bench at Southampton, Pawel Kieszek does it in Portugal and Przemyslaw Tyton in Holland. Top Ekstraklasa clubs have mediocre keepers (Mariusz Pawelek at Wisla), average ones (Grzegorz Kasprzik at Lech) or foreigners (Legia’s Jan Mucha, Ekstraklasa’s best goalie). There is no sign of some world class keeper suddenly emerging from the youth ranks (though it may all change in a season of course). What’s your take on the goalies?

WTF Majewski was chosen as Poland’s new coach.
And about the goalie thing, Borubas will prolly still be our #1 goalie in 2012. He’s just too good to drop, though he had some terrible games some months ago but the seems to got over that. Will be an as big Celtic Legend as Larsson was.
Keeper #2 will be Szczesny I guess, he seems to be really talented.
I dont think Fab will ever become the Arsenal #1, he simply doesnt seem to be that good from what Ive seen of him playing for the Gunner. Hes been decent for Poland though.

Majewski is just going to be serving as the interim coach, right? I”m sure he will not last until 2012…
As for Artur Boruc, I really like the guy, but in all honesty he cost us games against Northern Ireland twice, Slovakia, and in my opinion all the goals he gave up against Slovenia in the 3-0 stomping were at least partially his fault, with the first and the third being completely unnecessary. It just seems there are times when he feels he needs to come off his line when it doesn’t make sense to do so, and he always seems to be having communication problems with his back line. Our results at the Euro proved that having a goalie playing at the peak of his ability and making remarkable saves will not win you games, just keep you in them. I feel we have much bigger concerns, and Tomasz, I appreciate you taking the time to address the positions on the team one by one. I look forward to the future posts in this series. Cheers.

I say Artur stays number one. Don’t goalkeepers tend to get better as they age?

There is a small possibility Szczesny might play in the Carling Cup but most likely it’ll be Mannone again. If he doesn’t get a chance there, then the smart thing for him to do would be to request a loan move. In fact, he should probably move on permanently. I agree with Tomasz, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll move up to #1 by 2012 if he’s still only fourth choice now.
Kuszczak is a lost cause. I’ve never understood why he believes being 2nd or 3rd choice at a big club is so prestigious. Even top four clubs in England struggle to find good back-up keepers because no self-respecting keeper wants to play second fiddle! Tim Howard, Ben Foster and Fabien Barthez have all stated they would rather leave Manchester United than play benchwarmer. Lehmann preferred to go back to the Bundesliga than warm the bench for Arsenal. Scott Carson preferred to leave Liverpool, while Joe Hart asked for a move away from Manchester City. The only talented keeper who seems content with such a situation is Kuszczak… Kuszczak needs to ask himself this: if simply being at a big club is more prestigious than being #1 at a smaller club, then is everyone else looking for the exit?

That should have been: “then *why* is everyone looking for the exit.”
Majewski will only be manager for the last two matches.

Piszczek scored for Hertha against Venstpils in the Europa League.

Majewski says he might make a few squad changes but there will be “no revolution” as he wants the “best” players out there… WTF? Our “best” players got thumped 3-0 by Slovenia. There needs to be a massive shake-up, we need to begin investing in the future. The squad for the Czech Republic and Slovakia should be composed mostly of new players, they could learn a lot from the experience. Why waste the experience on the same old players who’ve proven themselves to be crap and who certainly won’t be around in 2012?

The papers in London have an add for the first Arsenal carling cup game saying ’see the future for £10′ the add is splashed with photos of arsenals VERY young players. With this statement to their fans Szczesny has a good chance to play. I imagine Fabianski would be first choice but as he is not fit to play Szczesny will need the playing time just in case he gets a call up through another injury.

I think its really hard to predict who will be the starting keeper for the 2012 Euros. These things change considerably from year to year. Just look at the goalkeeping situation last year around this time. The only thing certain is that Boruc will be between the pipes.
For the last two remaining games, I hope we don’t see anyone in the starting lineup over 30. That means goodbye to Bosacki, Żewłakow, Krzynówek, M. Lewandowski, and Saganowski. I would want to see: Gancarczyk, Jodłowiec, Dudka?, and Golański on defence. Iwanski and Gargula should be given another chance. Maybe give guys like Radosław Majewski, Dawid Nowak, and Dawid Janczyk a chance as well. With Jelen back and healthy, I would demote Robert Lewandowski to the U23 squad.
Then again all this means nothing if these guys are gonna drink before the games. A lot of evidence supports that article. I bet Boruc and M. Lewandowski were the ring leaders in that.

I think we should ditch Dudka. He has little talent (not even good enough for Auxerre who are near the bottom of the table in Ligue 1…) and seems to lack professionalism. Remember, Dudka was one of the three players suspended after the Lvov incident. Most likely he was also one of the players de Zeeuw was referring to in that illuminating interview..
Even if we kept him, what for? He’s useless as a CB, hasn’t played LB in ages, and even as a def. midfielder he’s mediocre. Auxerre fans say they’ve tried him in a number of roles but he’s not particularly good at anything. Unless there are some injuries he won’t be playing regularly for Auxerre.

I think Dudka has decent speed and aerial ability for a centre back. He does need to work on his positioning and be more vocal and a better leader. If there was someone for sure better than by all means get rid of him. I would like to see Jodlowiec and Augustyn paired in centre defense eventually, but as long as there is any sort of improvement that would be great. We need a disciplined group of defenders that can play well together, communicate, and lead. I guess the page on defense will be written soon enough.

SD’s Europa League Round-up
I find it hilarious how Piszczek is scoring all these goals and “King Artur” has still yet to land one in the net. He wasn’t even in Herthas line up or bench today. I think he’s just a one hit wonder with Arminia B.
Boruc did well in his match today but Celtic D weren’t helping him much like Polands D. Boruc should try to move to the Premier League.
From looking at the minute-by-minute on uefa.com, Obraniak looked to have a busy game and actually played full 90 mins. He did a lot of corner and free kicks. Obraniak and Kuba should be the only ones doing the corner kicks cause they’re both the shortest on the NT anyway.
M Lewy played for Shaktar where they won 1-4 against Brugge(could have been Lech they played, battle of the Lewandowskis). Roger wasn’t on AEK roster and neither was Golanski on Steauas. Polish ref in AEK-Everton match giving away 2 reds cards, don’t mess with the Polish refs.
Side note : Maybe Majewski didn’t change up NT squad b/c he still hopes to qualify to the WC which I still hope for. Sure the matches would be good experience but with 3 years till euro thats plenty of time to squeaze a WC in

hey tomasz why dont you apply to be polands coach? if a 15 year old can do it anyone can http://www.polishsoca.com/newswire/national-team/1864-a-15-year-old-wants-to-take-vacant-poland-coaching-job
just shows what a joke this whole thing has become with the pzpzn in charge

a- I bet Kryzno was part of the beer fest too… that guy just looks like an alcoholic, face is always so flushed and confused; especially during throw-ins.
I think Boruc will probably still be nr1, keepers get better with age, etc what most people have already said here. Fabianski should be Arsenal’s nr1, I feel based on Arsene’s quote over the summer and extending his contract he’ll be the nr1 next year, if not sooner if he gets healthy and Almunia has his typical injuries. My prediction: 1.)Boruc 2.)Fabianski 3.)Szczesny (Lukas can move up if he’s nr1 for the Gunners or any other top 5 EPL team).

Mike – Engel needs anti-psychotics. I’ll prescribe them for him if he comes to America, he obviously isn’t in the right frame of mind.

We always go 3 4 deep at the position, we need creaters , scorers, or defenders.

It is a real good idea Tomasz this review by position. Boruc as number 1 for sure. The reals questions will be with the defenders, when we will have a real squad there, we will be good enough to compete.

Radoslaw Majewski is poised to make a surprise return to the Nottingham Forest squad for Blackpool’s visit to the City Ground.
The Poland midfielder has missed two matches with a knee injury which was expected to keep him out for another couple of weeks.
But Majewski resumed training on Thursday to put himself back in contention for a place in Billy Davies’ squad

Another news about Smolarek: http://goal.com/en/news/15/germany/2009/09/18/1508662/hannover-join-race-for-free-agent-ebi-smolarek-report

Hannover will be better than HSV I think, since at Hamburg he’d only be a temporary replacement for that Guerrero dude, than probably get thrown on the bench.
Good news, Majewski wants to play with 2 strikers next game.

A couple months ago, Platini suggested that Germany might replace Ukraine as our Euro 2012 co-host. Now he says that it’ll definitely be Poland with Ukraine, there’s no alternative plan. The only question remaining is whether all four Ukrainian cities can manage to win approval.

Call me greedy but I kinda want Poland to have 5 cities cause
i want Krakow to be a host city. Tourist going to the stadium will see the most beautiful city in Poland. Chorzow is a dump so I really don’t care too much for it but Krakow deserves it more than some unheard of Ukrainian cities with most likely little to offer in sight seeing.

As far as I know the options 4+1, 4+2 or 4+4 are possible. There was no talk about us having 5 cities recently, the remaining four cities would just get more games. I agree about the beauty of Kakow, fortunately some fans may visit the city on their way to Warsaw. On a sidenote, I really hope that Poznan will be able to advertise the games better in 2012 than they did for this year’s Eurobasket. If I wasn’t generally interested in sport I wouldn’t have known that any games were taking place.
