Who Is Leo’s Mystery New Striker (Poll)?
At last, in today’s Gazeta Wyborcza I read the first decent interview with Leo after our Euro failure. A lot of usual grumbling about the poor state of Polish football and lack of necessary infrastructure (we don’t have a place to train in Warsaw, we’ll have to play in Wroclaw, where there is only 9500 capacity stadium etc.), but there were also many questions concerning particular players. What’s most interesting, Leo announced that he’ll call up a totally new striker for our WC qualifiers.
I decided to translate Leo’s most interesting (at least for me) answers:
About a conflict with Tomasz Kuszczak: He didn’t do anything more than Boruc or Fabianski. Accusations towards Frans (Hoek, our goalie coach) are idiotic. I know that they couldn’t get along. I don’t know why. Maybe because Tomek ended every discussion with a sentence “I’m Manchester United’s goalkeeper”. I answered “So what?”.
It’s official now, Kuszczak was dumb (or ambitious) enough to threaten good chemistry in the team.
About a conflict with Kuba Blaszczykowski: That’s bullshit. Kuba’s injury hurt us all. He’s our Christiano Ronaldo. Don’t laugh, I know that they are on a different level, but they are the same type of players.
Kuba says that there is no conflict, Leo says that there is no conflict, only journalists are dead sure that there is a conflict.
About Smolarek, Zurawski and Krzynowek’s poor form: You can’t buy form on a market. Footballers are very similar to journalists. One day it takes an hour to write a text, another day it takes four.
Leo should have mentioned bloggers as well.
About Dariusz Dudka’s Euro performance: He was great. In every game he played on a similar, high level. Even when he played as a defender against Croatia.
Is Dudka new Jacek Bak? We have to wait for the Ukraine friendly.
About Adam Kokoszka’s transfer to Empoli: I told him that he made a great choice. So what if Empoli plays in Serie B. Italy is a defenders’ homeland. (…) He always plays on a high, similar level. I believe in him.
About Radek Matusiak: He is slowly reaching his standard level. I still think that he can be a great player. His talent is unbelievable.
I also always had a soft spot for Radomatu, but I’m no longer a believer.
About Pawel Brozek, Ireneusz Jelen and Arkadiusz Radomski: Doors are open for them.
Great to hear that Leo doesn’t write anybody off.
About Robert Lewandowski: He’s a very talented player. But is he ready to play against Czech Rep? Against all those gianst? When the play is faster you’ve got less space and time to make a decision and when you get a ball two guys want to kill you.
Yeah, I think nobody expects Lewandowski to win a place in nt’s first eleven, but it’s worth keeping an eye on him.
About Maciej Rybus: He’s only 19 and, as for today, he’s not prepared to face Germany. I watch him, I think he’s got great talent, but his time hasn’t come yet.
Just similar to Lewandowski.
About Ludovic Obraniak: Second Robert Acquafresca. But he can’t play for Poland, because he played for France’s youth teams. Fifa won’t allow him to. It’s the same situation as Mauro Cantoro’s.
Shit, we’ve got different versions here. Our scouts are certain that Obraniak is eligible to play for us, whereas Leo now says that he’s not. Would it be easier to just ask Fifa?
About Maciej Zurawski: He is still a very important member of the team.
Important declaration from Leo, but does Magic deserve a place in the first squad?
About the new U-23 team: It’s a good idea but only if they play against tough opponents.
I agree here, no need to play endless games against Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia. Those players need real international experience.
Most interesting, who’s going to score goals for Poland? A new lone striker of the national team, you’ll get to know him soon.
That’s interesting. Is Leo bluffing or is there really a player that he counts on so much. To be honest, I can’t think of one particular lad that haven’t played much to this date and is now ready to be our top goalscorer. Return of Matusiak? Introduction of Janczyk? Re-introduction of Brozek? Change of position for Zahorski? Have a guess.
Who is Leo’s mystery new striker?

Ben Foster is also a goalkeeper for Manchester United. But he says without regular games he doesn’t even expect to get into the squad, much less challenge for the top spot.
So why is Kuszczak always demanding special treatment? For a time he even seemed to think he deserves to be above Boruc. Maybe Tomek thinks Polish goalkeepers are worse than their English counterparts, so it should be easier to get called up and to become #1?
There have been reports like this for some time now… Tomek needs to drop his attitude of entitlement and start acting in a more mature manner, otherwise, Leo might drop him from the squad permanently.
About the new striker, I have a sinking feeling it’s Pitry! I would rather he gave another chance to Jelen. Also bring along a youngster, either Robert Lewandowski, Janczyk, or Janota (he can play either as an attacking midfielder or as a striker) even if they’re not ready to feature now.

I would also enjoy Jelen back in the squad but Leo just bitches that he has shoulder problems and doesn’t include him. Lewandowski and Janota are both way too inexperienced, especially Janota who doesn’t even have a cap for Feyenoord, ya I do know he played very well in friendlies but hell Kuszczak has started every Man U friendly this season as far as i know but everyone knows he wont be number 1. My guess would be either Janczyk mainly because he is one of my favorite players and im still happy with him U-20 world cup performance. Sikora would be my next guess. He was quite a prolific goal scorer in the ekstraklasa but was always overshadowed by someone jizzing their pants about Brozek. Speaking of Brozek it definitively wont be him because it sounds like Leo is opting for something like a 4-5-1 formation and Wisla tried playing that way in friendlies with Brozek and he was horrible.

@zaraza
At first I liked Kuszczak’s ambitious attitude; this probably enabled him to progress from Hertha’s nr 3 to ManUtd. But now I don’t think Leo can accept a player that puts his own needs and ambitions before the team. And I won’t cry after him as I think Fabianski is a better option for nr 2. As for the strikers, I wonder on which position will Jelen play this season. He wants to be a striker, but I suspect he’ll end up on a wing. I would like the mystery guy to be Janczyk, but only if he plays and scores regularly for CSKA. Other than that, I have no idea about whom is Leo talking about.
@Alek
Leo is clearly not a fan of Jelen because he claimed to be injured and then played for Auxerre. At the same time, we need more fast players in our squad and I’d like to have an option like Jelen on the bench. I agree that it’s too early for Lewandowski or Janota, at least when we talk about the qualifiers (I’d give them a chance in winter friendlies). Janczyk may be this mystery option, but where does this sudden love from Leo comes from? He didn’t even include him in the squad of 26 before Euros. As for Sikora, I don’t think there’s any possibility that Leo will call him up, he’s looking for a ‘physical’ type of player.
