Squad Watch: Week 9. What We’re In For With Grzegorz Lato.
Last week’s Polish FA elections overshadowed even the most spectacular individual player performances. Grzegorz Lato became the FA’s president; a choice that proved that the delegates weren’t ready for any sort of a positive change. Lato is a representative of “the old”; that is officials skilled in wasting money and clapping each other’s backs. The only hope is that Lato proves so bad that he’ll have to resign in a year’s time.

Summary: Ok, let’s have a look at who became the newest Polish FA president. It’s a person that is yet to prove that he has any managerial skills. It’s a person that has never been a head of a big company or organization before. It’s a person that coached Amica Wronki in the times when this club took part in corruption scandals. It’s a person who chose members of the so called “concrete” fraction (resistant to change) as his closest advisors. Needless to say, a lot of his closest co-workers took part or “failed to notice” the ongoing corruption. It’s a person who failed to present any ideas on how youth training should look like in Poland. It’s a person that is unable to speak any foreign languages on a communicative level. It’s a person who struggled to read his own election programme before voting. Change? Who needs change, it’s good for the USA. After all, Polish football is in a perfect state, all thanks to people who govern it at the moment. I give you the new president of Polish FA, Grzegorz Lato.
If you thought that it’ll take Lato some time to mess something up you were wrong. Only after being elected our wise president said that we can organise Euro 2012 with Germany if Ukraine fails to meet the demands. What class, what diplomacy. Only now we’ve got the whole Ukrainian government on our heads. Please Mr Lato, try to think next time you say something. It really doesn’t hurt.
A video of Lato’s language skills (found on Rafal Stec’s blog)
Artur Wichniarek just won’t let us forget about him. Eight goals this season and counting; maybe he’ll even compete for the top goalscorer crown, though the leader (Ibisevic) has 13 goals to his name. Arminia are now preparing a big rise for Konig Artur, a one that would make him earn twice as much as the other players. That’s how you repay your legend. Is it worth starting the Beenhakker vs Wichniarek debate once again? Personally, I don’t think so. Let’s consider Wichniar a club player only and just admire the goals he scores.
It’s official, Ebi Smolarek failed to win a place in Bolton’s starting lineup. Not only that, he even fails to lift his ass from the bench. That’s a hugely disappointing spell for Ebi, who escaped from Santander in order to get more playing time. Is he that bad, or does he only need more time to adapt? I somehow can’t see him running 90 minutes with his tongue out Bolton style. Another year to forgot for Ebi? It al points in that direction.
Finally, good news came to us from Holland, and this time it didn’t concern Michal Janota. Polish 18 year old Pawel Wojciechowski scored in his debut for SC Heerenveen, the same club for which Radoslaw Matusiak was not good enough. I’ve never seen Wojciechowski play; from what I read he’s a striker that can play in midfield. He scored more goals than there were games for Heerenveen’s youth team and, as a result, was added to the senior team. He played as a midfielder in his debut and wasn’t entirely satisfied because of a painful injury he suffered. Wojciechowski is also a member of Polish U-19 team, so don’t be afraid of anyone stealing him from us. I’ll definitely keep an eye on him.
Highlights:
Pawel Brozek scores in, I have to say it, Magic style
Robert Lewandowski gets lucky
A dynamite of a shot from Lukasz Gargula
Marcin Wasilewski does what he knows best, that is score with a header
Grzegorz Rasiak doesn’t waste time after recovering from injury
Artur Wichniarek keeps his nerve against Bayern
Pawel Wojciechowski, the newest addition to Polish talents list

Ebi, please, come back to either Germany or Holland. I don’t want to be an ass, but you’re simply not good enough for either La Liga or the Premier League. And it only hurts your international play.
I think Feyenoord could make some very good use of you.

I didn’t watch the entire video but how’s Lato’s English? That’s far more important than knowing German, everyone in Europe has at least some knowledge of English.
Brozek is turning into a really decent striker.

ok…most of the polish players are doing good including smolarek..maybe he does not play but he is proving him self..he does show the coach that he can score a goal in da reserves, but megson ecuses are the reason for smolareks playing time..he claimed that the fans wanted Riga to be substituded, he chose gardner over smolarek in man city, and it was 5 years since gardners last goal. (it was luck for his goal, he barly scored) and megson ALWAYS says “Smolarek need some time” TIME FOR WAT!! he is capable of scoring, by not letting him play u r making his ability to score go down. He is styll recouvering from euro 2008 and his preformence. But he cant show us anything or imporve because HE DOESNT PLAY!
Brozek is becoming a descent stricker i agree with u der, and its good dat Lato is minister of PZPN becuz he was on da team in 1974 POLAND DREAM TEAM! Overall Poland should be a success!

Wichniarek is the King!!! Leo’s got the arse hole transplant and the arse hole transplant’s rejected him.

Polish football is in terrible shape right now. Lato being elected president doesn’t make things any better. Our national team lacks talent aside from our GK’s and Blaszczykowski. Smolarek good? He’s too weak and fragile to make it in a good league. He’s paper thin and looks like he hasn’t eaten in weeks. Our domestic league is a joke. Don’t expect Poland to do anything worth mentioning besides qualify for the odd tournament here and there until the corruption in the PZPN is eliminated, which doesn’t look like will occur very soon.

polish football is going to be fucked for a long time if we keep elcting guys like lato in. ebi seems to be a bit of a lost cause when it comes to club football, good to see brozek and lewandowski continue to score and grow as players, i still want to see wichniarek involved with the nt and good to see this wojciechowski get some time at heerenveen

Ebi long time ago should go to a gym and lift some weights. That is what all good players do to get stronger. He looks like he never bench pressed even one kilo in his life. Now it is too late for that and only finesse players with his body type can be successful on the bigger stage. He was never finesse player so that is why he is too weak for premiership. His speed was never above average and only thing that made him OK player was his scoring instinct. He is too old to improve his speed, too old to change his body type and too old to be a better player. His time has passed. We need to look in different direction for strikers. Janota, Wojciechowski, Janczak, Wichniarek, those are the guys we need to look at. Janczak has to get out from Russia ASAP and start playing somewhere. He has talent and with time he can get back to groove. I would compare him to P Brozek from about 5 years ago but I think Janczak has more skills. Wichniarek is not young anymore but he and Brozek could make very good pair of strikers that can play vs. anyone.
Janota and Wojciechowski are the future. Those guys have no fear and they are obviously doing something right. I saw few games on video of those guys and they are something else. If they keep playing and improving like they are doing now we will have a lot of use for both in NT.
Lato is a miss. I don’t want to be too hard on him out of respect for what he did for NT but his comment about Euro and Germany was just moronic. There is no hope for Polish football with leader like this. I have to add that I don’t think Listkiewicz is out of the picture yet since Lato was his biggest ass kisser. He can be running this cesspool behind the scene.

BTW
Tomasz, bunch of thanks for running this blog. You are doing us big favor and we are grateful for it. Keep up the good work. I can only imagine how much time you have to put to gather all information to have this thing going.

Michal and dezerter, great posts; Smolarek has no place on our NT.

Boruc saved six shots on goals for the hoops today against Man Utd — wish I could have seen them get the tie. ….the blue red devils missed 25 shots (good Celtics D I suppose)
– Blaszczykowski, R. Lewandowski, Brozek — things can’t be so bad for the future of Polish football. Compared to World Cup 06, and Euro 08, shouldn’t the Bialo-Czervoni improve on those recent challenges. (?) Some Dominating defensive backs would do wonders (where are they) with the striking potential we have. Ebi will be fine if he just keeps working/hustling — most of his goals are because he worked for them more than his skill. I think he does have the skill, but needs to work hard to make it shine — he can beat the defenses if he keeps moving smartly.
I can only speculate about Lato based on what I read, but @ Stan: his performance in the 70’s says nothing about what he can do now. At Yahoo Sports and Reuters (i.e. http://football.uk.reuters.com/european/news/LU58953.php?refresh=true) Lato states the need to improve Polish football and end corruption. Maybe this is a load of crap. But we need to stay on him and comment on any forum to push him to stick to his word. Maybe he will really do something beyond his on-field ‘dream team’ ability. Lato should realize the legend he could be to if he really could stick his word and provide for an improved Polish F A program.
I must be dreaming – what do I know?

This bunch of old farts will never know what’s good for them in the long run. A massive youth development program – based on what Holland and France did in the recent past – is what’s needed. They will just keep on waisting loads of money and do nothing because they don’t have a clue.
