Squad Watch: Week 5. Unimpressive Debut By Ebi Smolarek.

September 22nd, 2008 | By: tomasz | 13 Comments »

Ebi Smolarek can’t find his form from Euro 2008 qualifiers. He posed no threat whatsoever in his debut game for Bolton Wanderers. The Premiership, at least in the first match, proved too fast and competetive for him. The other Polish highlight of the weekend was Tomasz Kuszczak’s involvement in Super Sunday game against Chelsea. He did ok, though some commentators state that he could’ve acted better before Kalou’s goal. Finally, a worrying trend of Poles losing places in the starting lineups abroad can be observed.

Ireneusz Jelen (AJ Auxerre)- 67 minutes against Lille
Robert Lewandowski (Lech Poznan)- 82 minutes against Piast, note 5
Lukasz Piszczek (Hertha Berlin)- 15 minutes against Borussia MG
Grzegorz Rasiak (Watford)- not in the squad against Reading, injury
Marek Saganowski (Aalborg)- 80 minutes against FC Copenhagen
Ebi Smolarek (Bolton Wanderers)- 56 minutes against Arsenal
Artur Wichniarek (Arminia Bielefeld)- 89 minutes and a goal? against FC Koeln
Tomasz Zahorski (Gornik Zabrze)- 90 minutes against Slask, note 6
Maciej Zurawski (Larissa)- 22 minutes against Skoda Xanthi

Summary: I had a chance to watch the whole 56 minutes of Ebi Smolarek’s debut for Bolton. I was disappointed, but not surprised with what I saw. It was Ebi that we’ve been watching for the last half a year, only against a better opponent. I don’t think that Arsenal players will remember him after this game. Smolarek was too slow and uninventive to do anything good in the game; yes his technique is good, but he used it for nothong else than passing to the closest teammate. There was a complete lack of bravery and anger in his game, attributes that are essential when you want to survive in a club like Bolton. Ebi played both on a right wing and as a lone striker and was ineffective in both positions. His substitute, Mustapha Riga, brought much more flair into the game. Ebi needs to switch fast to a new style of play and forget completely about the Euro qualifiers.

Tomasz Kuszczak had a chance to show off his skills against Chelsea due to van der Sar’s injury. He saved what he had to save and let in what he had to let in. Or did he? Some experts raise doubts whether Kuszczak acted correctly during the goal for the Blues. You have to make up your mind on your own with this one, but I don’t think that he could do much more in this situation. Apart from that, our goalie signed a new contract with United lately. The only question is whether Fergie (or Rudolf Red Nose as some call him) extended his contract because Kuszczak is a future nr 1 or because he wants to have a good backup keeper. For me both options are equally justified; sir Alex may as well want to buy a star keeper in the future as leave both Kuszczak and Foster to compete for the nr 1 blouse. If latter is the case then we’ll have a starting keeper at ManUtd, mainly because Foster is not far from Chris Kirkland (former Dudek’s nemesis at Liverpool) in terms of injury proneness.

It’s sad, but I don’t have much to write about. More and more Polish players lose place in their teams abroad. Want some examples? Two of our leaders, Jacek Krzynowek and Mariusz Lewandowski, are regularly dropped from the squad this season. Krzyniu can’t even make the bench and is desperate to find a new employer. Dariusz Dudka didn’t start the last 3-4 games and is yet to impress anyone at Auxerre. Pawel Golanski returned from injury for Steaua, but will find it hard to play regularly as the Romanian giants brought back George Ogararu from Ajax (his favourite position is right defender as we read in Wikipedia). Some players lost their places in the team after they’d returned from international games: Marcin Kowalczyk, Mariusz Jop and Lukasz Pisczek didn’t start in the last two games. To top that, Marek Saganowski can’t score a single goal in the Danish league, Dawid Janczyk plays football only during training sessions and Adam Kokoszka……well you all know what happened to one of our most talented defenders. Think about all of this next time you hear we should easily challenge the Czech Republic for the first place in our WC quals group.

Highlights:

Could Kuszczak do better in this situation?

For some it’s another goal by Wichniarek, for some it’s an own goal. A beauty nevertheless.

Roger starts to regain his form.

A tricky goal by Boguski.

Marek Saganowski, our starting striker. Ouuch.

hahaha, he was barely ever fed the ball. i don’t think it was as much an Ebi issue as it was a Bolton issue. Bolton all around didn’t threaten much all match WITH or WITHOUT Ebi. this wasn’t a good match for him to be tossed into for him to start his career at Bolton. it’ll be interesting to see how he does against the mid table, and bottom of the table clubs. Ebi was never expected to be a superstar. but what we will see in the next few weeks is whether he can actually compete in the EPL. personally i don’t think he is capable of it, i hope he can prove me wrong OR at least move back to Holland or Germany

good news i see from this weekend is Golanski getting 21 minutes against Gaz Metan. also Gargula getting 90 minutes and an assist against Lechia… both are bright spots coming back to health after injuries. i think Golanski will help out the back 4 immensely once back into things since he is quite a bit better than Wasilewski

Wichniarek strikes again in a top league! In the sametime, how our NT’s Strikers have performed?

I don’t know why this blog even bothers with Wichniarek if he wont play for the national team, we should start talking about Klose and Podolski’s goals just to add to the fun of talking about useless boobs who don’t play for Poland.

@Brian
I agree, it was a hard game to impress for a newcomer. At the same time, other offensive players like Davies, Nolan or Riga did much better. Ebi was just one of the weakest links in a poor team. It will be hard for Golanski to play regularly for Steaua from now on, unless he switches to left back position. Gargula is closely watched by Leo and assistansts, he may get a call up next week.
@others
Saganowski is out of form currently, this video only illustrates it. I hope Leo is aware of it and will leave Sagan out of the starting lineup. Unfortunately, Pawel Brozek can’t regain his form after the injury against Cracovia. He did quite well against Spurs, but lacked proper decision making vs Jagiellonia, he passed when he had to shoot and dribbled when he had to pass. Robert Lewandowski missed two great chances this weekend, ones he should score with his eyes shut. Alek, I like to include Wichniarek in this weekly report because he’s always likely to spark some controversy, discussion or just score goals.

I don’t think prime division is good fit for him at all. He was never physical player and he will get a lot of abuse from defenders that are much stronger then him. Only way to beat power is finesse combined with speed and Ebi never had either.
I don’t know if it is just me but I never saw this potential in him. To me he was always very average player who was playing OK vs. lesser opponents and with exception of Portugal match he never show international class. I’m not trying to bash him but I think we should forget about him in NT and move to younger players like Lewandowski (better speed, power and size). If he shows sign of improvement then maybe he can be bench warmer for Poland. But I don’t think he got skills to start.

Granted, Ebis’ size is an issue in a physical league such as the EPL, but i’m not sure whether he should be written off just yet. The Arsenal game was a one off, he had just landed in England the day prior, had trained with Bolton ONE day and was thrown head first against one of the giants (mind you they look like shit sometimes) of English football. So lets give him a couple weeks to settle. There are plenty of smaller players that do just fine in English football. He will have to work on his skill though. And as for Saganowski, god bless him, but he is shit. I really hope Leo would stop wasting a starting eleven spot on him. SHOULD have stopped wasting it matches ago and used Slovenia and SM to break in ANYONE ELSE. And as for Kuszczak, well, personally, i think that goal was one of those things where the player marking was more at fault then his positioning or anything else. I mean, what was he supposed to do? Unless he has animal instincts and psychic abilities he couldn’t possibly have seen that thing whiz past him. Anyway, he’s still sort of an asshole, but he’s our asshole. :)

It wasn’t really Ebi’s fault, the whole team played like crap.

The German’s would be laughing right now! Why do they play poor quality football? Why are Polish players lacking? Why is the PZPN lacking? Why is Poland lacking? Will they ever perform at their best?????????????????????
