Squad Watch: Week 5.

September 22nd, 2009 | By: tomasz | 15 Comments »

I seriously thought about publishing this Squad Watch report as nothing really interesting happened in Polish football last weekend. None of the Poles scored abroad, the Ekstraklasa round was the most boring so far in the season, Ebi Smolarek still haven’t found a new club (though he started training with HSV). The news that Stefan Majewski became Poland’s temporary coach is well known to everyone concerned. Still, if you’re interested, take a look at the data I compiled.

Goalkeepers:

Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow)- 90 minutes against Hearts
Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal London)- not in the squad against Wigan, injury
Tomasz Kuszczak (ManUtd)- on the bench against ManCity
Sebastian Przyrowski (Polonia Warsaw)- 90 minutes against Arka, note 8
Lukasz Zaluska (Celtic Glasgow)- on the bench against Hearts

Defenders:

Blazej Augustyn (Catania)- on the bench against Lazio
Barosz Bosacki (Lech Poznan)- 90 minutes against Odra, note 6
Dariusz Dudka (AJ Auxerre)- on the bench against St Etienne
Seweryn Gancarczyk (Lech Poznan)- 90 minutes against Odra, note 6
Kamil Glik (Pisat Gliwice)- 90 minutes against Jagiellonia, note 6

Tomasz Jodlowiec (Polonia Warsaw)- 90 minutes against Arka, note 5
Adam Kokoszka (Empoli F.C.)- 90 minutes against Frosinone
Marcin Komorowski (Legia Warsaw)- on the bench against Lechia
Marcin Kowalczyk (Dinamo Moscow)- 72 minutes against CSKA
Piotr Polczak (Cracovia Krakow)- 90 minutes against Ruch, note 4
Jakub Rzezniczak (Legia Warsaw)- 90 minutes against Lechia, note 6
Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht)- not in the squad against Ghent, injury
Michal Zewlakow (Olympiakos Pireus)- 90 minutes against PAOK

Midfielders:

Tomasz Bandrowski (Lech Poznan)- not in the squad against Odra
Rafal Boguski (Wisla Krakow)- not in the squad against Polonia Bytom, injury
Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund)- 25 minutes against Hannover
Roger Guerreiro (AEK Athens)- 90 minutes against Ioannina
Grzegorz Krychowiak (Bordeaux)- not in the squad against Boulogne
Jacek Krzynowek (Hannover 96)- 12 minutes against Dortmund
Mariusz Lewandowski (Shakhtar Donetsk)- 90 minutes and an assist against Arsenal
Wojciech Lobodzinski (Wisla Krakow)- 45 minutes against Polonia Bytom, note 4
Radoslaw Majewski (Nottingham Forest)- not in the squad against Blackpool, injury
Patryk Malecki (Wisla Krakow)- 90 minutes against Polonia Bytom, note 5
Rafal Murawski (Rubin Kazan)- didn’t play against Tomsk
Ludovic Obraniak (Lille)- on the bench against Lens
Szymon Pawlowski (Zaglebie Lubin)- 45 minutes against GKS Belchatow, note 4
Sławomir Peszko (Lech Poznan)-90 minutes and an assist against Odra, note 7
Lukasz Piszczek (Hertha Berlin)- 45 minutes against Freiburg
Bartosz Salamon (Brescia)- on the bench against Ascoli
Lukasz Tralka (Polonia Warsaw)- 90 minutes against Arka, note 5
Jakub Wilk (Lech Poznan)- 90 minutes and a goal against Odra, note 7

Attackers:

Pawel Brozek (Wisla Krakow)- 90 minutes and an assist against Polonia Bytom, note 5
Kamil Grosicki (Jagiellonia)- 67 minutes against Piast, note 5
Dawid Janczyk (Lokeren)- 90 minutes against Standard Liege
Michal Janota (Excelsior Rotterdam)- 90 minutes against MVV Maastricht
Ireneusz Jelen (AJ Auxerre)- 90 minutes against St Etienne
Robert Lewandowski (Lech Poznan)- 90 minutes against Odra, note 6
Dawid Nowak (GKS Belchatow)- not in the squad against Zaglebie, injury
Grzegorz Rasiak (Reading)- 90 minutes against Peterborough
Marek Saganowski (Southampton)- 72 minutes against Yeovil
Ebi Smolarek (no club)- season not yet started
Lukasz Sosin (Anorthosis Famagusta)- couldn’t find the info
Artur Wichniarek (Hertha Berlin)- 63 minutes against Freiburg
Maciej Zurawski (Omonia Nicosia)- 90 minutes against Ethnikos

Highlights: I never thought that the main attraction of the Squad Watch could be Jakub Wilk’s goal (assist by Peszko)…here

Sounds like Smolarek is being linked all over. The latest is he may be part of the Philadelphia expansion team in the MLS in 2010. Check out Weekend Best #8 below: http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylt=AvTKnIMGkn57KMdcxpMLLXgmw7YF?slug=ro-weekendreview092109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

For those who understand Polish, I just read this in onet.pl in the comments section, Polish football fans are organizing a protest against the PZPN on the day of the next WC qualifier against Slovakia, the are asking Poles to refrain from buying tickets and attending the game, they also say it has been done before in other countries, namely Serbia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina where some national team players also joined the protest:

“PROTEST- Rusza protest kibiców przeciwko PZPN! Pierwszą poważną okazją do pokazania im, że mamy ich dość to 14.10.2009 mecz Polska – Słowacja. Apel do wszystkich kibiców w całej Polsce – ZBOJKOTUJMY ten mecz!!! Proszę skopiujcie ten komunikat i umieśćcie go na innych forach.”

Szczesny making his Arsenal debut against WBA (Carling Cup). Apparently he’s made some good saves.

Majewski – not available for the Carling Cup match against Blackburn. Suffered a setback with his knee injury and may need another week to recover.

Kokoszka – not available for the Serie B match against Modena. Reason’s not really clear but there appears to be some health problem.

Salamon – came on in the 82nd minute of the Serie B match against Sassuolo.

Janota – scored in the Dutch Cup

Blacha – came on in the 78th minute of the DFB Pokal match against Greuther Furth, they’re going into extra time..

Radek, thanks for that information. I have long felt that a boycott is the only option and I’m glad to read that fans in Poland have decided to make this bold move. Government intervention failed to have any effect, the PZPN ran to their buddies at FIFA to protect them… Thus, a boycott is the only option, FIFA can’t help the PZPN in this situation. :D

It’ll be interesting to see what happens. I suspect the sponsors will probably get upset and add to the pressure on the PZPN.

Here’s the video of Janczyk’s goal

10 year old Kacper Chodyna from northern Poland has been invited back for a second trial at AC Milan

However, even if they offer him a place in their youth academy it could get complicated due to regulations against the movement of young players.

There is speculation that Szczesny might make his Premier League debut on Saturday as Almunia and Fabianski both need more time and Vito Mannone failed to convince in his recent outings.

Szczesny looks just like my cousin. Anyway, I get the feeling he’s gonna be a big name goalie in the future, even bigger than Boruc or Dudek.

Whoa @ that Smolarek rumor. I live outside Philly and am really looking forward to rooting for that team so it’d be awesome if he joins them.

There is speculation that Kuszczak, like Szczesny, might play on Saturday as Edwin van der Sar is still injured and the midweek display from Tomasz Kuszczak contrasted with Foster’s nervy performance in the derby.

It will be great to see in the same weekend Szczesny and Kuszczak playing for two of the biggest team in the world!

I enjoy watching Janczyk’s goals, they look so effortless, he makes them look easy.
