Poland-FC Schaffhausen 1:0. Full Review.
After expressing my first thoughts and a general feeling after the game against FC Schaffhausen the time has come to review the game in more detail. There’s no point in making some foregone conclusions, but at the same time the game gave some material for analysis.
Some data from the game (with notes from Przeglad Sportowy):
Poland - FC Schaffhausen 1:0 (0:0): Krzynowek (74.). Poland: Fabianski 5 (70. Szczesny) - Wasilewski 6 (61. Wawrzyniak 4), Jop 5 (46. Zewlakow 5), Kokoszka 4 (61. Bak 5), Golanski 5 (69. Blaszczykowski 4) - Majewski 4(61. Lobodzinski 4), Pazdan 4 (46. Dudka 3), Murawski 4 (69. Krzynowek 5), Gargula 6 (46. Zahorski 4) - Saganowski 2 (46. Zurawski 5), Matusiak 2 (46. Roger 6).
Here are extended highlights from the game:
And only a goal for those who don’t have the patience:
And here are my own thoughts about how particular players performed:
Lukasz Fabianski: confident performance. Often acted as a last defender, not scared to rush forward. Saved 2-3 shots comfortably.
Marcin Wasilewski: one of the best players on the field. As always he looks physically powerful. Constitutes a physical presence in opponents’ penalty box, made two dangerous headers after Gargula’s free kicks. Not scared to run forward. Has problems with the last pass or cross.
Jakub Wawrzyniak: looked lively but didn’t have enough time to impress Leo. May be our first choice DL if Bronowicki doesn’t make it.
Mariusz Jop: it shows that he’s a regular at FC Moscow, confident performance.
Michal Zewlakow: played as a DC and it seems that this is a position he’ll cover during the Euros. Says that he’s too old to play a DL.
Adam Kokoszka: it still remains a mystery if he can make it on an international scene, wasn’t tested by the Swiss. Had to foul Schaffhausen’s attacker after Dudka’s back pass. Normally it would result in a red card.
Jacek Bak: the defence wasn’t as confdent as it should be after Bak’s coming on the field. Considered a starting DC along with Zewlakow.
Pawel Golanski: tried as a DL but didn’t look convincing there. Played ten minutes as a DR after Wasyl’s departure and put in 1-2 good crosses. Looks in form.
Jakub Blaszczykowski: tried as an offensive DR. Looked lively but had to leave the field with a minor injury. Will probably rest a couple of days.
Radoslaw Majewski: couldn’t perform the role of playmaker as Leo tested him on the right wing. Looked far from comfortbale there. Too nervous; will have to deliver in the remaining friendlies.
Wojciech Lobodzinski: lacks the confidence he had half a year ago. A couple of unsuccesful dribbles.
Michal Pazdan: too chaotic, lacked good positioning. Proper when passing the ball to the wings, loses his head when has to play forward.
Dariusz Dudka: a scary performance. After injury Dudka by no means looks prepared for the Euros. One horrible back pass and a lot of problems with first touch. Bad positioning as well. Hard work ahead.
Rafal Murawski: a surprising below average performance from Muras. Given a chance to shine as a MC in the first half but couldn’t use it. A couple of good passes in the second half.
Jacek Krzynowek: scored a trademark goal. Ambitious as always. Says that he feels a lot better than two years ago and it shows.
Lukasz Gargula: used his chance well. Even though he played as a ML he was the closest to control the game in our team. Very dangerous with free kicks and corners. Gargula-Majewski 1:0.
Tomasz Zahorski: played as a left winger but without much success. Had a decent chance but took too much time on the ball. I would like to see him as a striker.
Marek Saganowski: very poor. No shot on goal, no dribble, no keeping the ball.
Maciej Zurawski: played as a lone striker which probably won’t be his position during the Euros. Still managed to pose more threat than Sagan and Radomatu put together.
Radoslaw Matusiak: looked just as hopeless as in his last games for Wisla. Lacks acceleration, lost his confidence on the ball.
Roger: showed signs of what he’s capable of and of what qualities he can bring to the team. Played as an AMC, performed some good surprising passes, tried to speed up the game. Some unecessary tricks.
General conclusions:
- Roger will play as an attacking midfielder in the national team
- we don’t have a left back. Bronowicki is still to recover from injury, Zewlakow will play as a central defender and Wawrzyniak is not experienced enough
- Golanski is not a left back
- Majewski is not a right midfielder
- Dudka is not a good player. No wait, he’s still to recover from an injury. But he must do it fast because yesterday’s performance was horrible.
- it may not be a matter of who’s going to be better from Saganowski-Matusiak pair but who’s going to be less shit
- we need Smolarek as a lone striker
- Gargula’s form is on the rise
- we’ve got two well prepared right backs in Wasyl and Golanski
- Blasczykowski will play in the Euros with ‘Kuba’ on his back, just like in Bundesliga
Today the Bialo Czerwoni are taking a break from training and will visit a Porsche factory with a view to chill out. Ebi Smolarek and Artur Boruc joined the team yesterday so we have full, 26 men squad in training. Leo said that we’ll see a different team in monday and tuesday’s friendlies. I think that after those games we’ll see, more or less, who’s ready for an Euro challenge.

thanks, I was waiting for the news specifically about those positions about which the competition is the most interesting.
That is:
amc - I always thoguht Majewski can go instead of Garguła only if the former is in a demolishing shape, and the latter in a poor one; Radek impressed at the junior level and in OE, which is something, but not yet enough to play against die Deutsche in an opening match. Beenhakker has to know that the risk would be extreme, so an extreme situation is needed for that to happen; my conclusion is, Garguła will be Leo’s choice besides Roger.
st - I quietly counted on Sagan to be a discovery of the training camp, it seems he will not. good we still have smolarek to play in the position, so we still have 3 attackers (+żuraw, zahorski). even if that excludes Ebi from the left wing, Garguła can play there. plenty of options to choose from for the Boss, and maybe in the following 2 weeks something happens and either Radomatu or Sagan will actually impress. Let’s keep in mind this game was only a different form of training
kokoszka v wawrzyniak - from what you’ve written, the latter seems to be teh better choice. surprisingly to me, Żewłak isn’t the obvious LB. who would’ve thought! I fear neither Brono nor Wawrzyniak is the man for the 1st line-up for the Germs.
and: will Bąk really sit on the bench?! I can’t believe it, though in the latest games he really showed symptoms of growing old.
On the whole, I’m mildly optimistic, I trust what Leo says. and I didn’t watch the match:)

Just came back from the Wisla Krakow VS U-20 Brazil game. Nice result for our side, a solid 2 nil. Jirsak and Cantoro scored, but i was most especially impressed with the Costa Rican Junior Diaz, amazing work rate. For a mostly second string side they did a wonderful job of shutting the Brazilians out and other then two close calls they managed to really negate any advantages the young ‘chosen ones’ had. Wisla must have had mistaken this for a home game because out of the 6G who attended i really think five and half had to be Poles. Nice showing for Polish football abroad.

@Gregorio
amc-Majewski proved in this game that he can only be considered as an amc. That’s not good news for him as he’s behind Zuraw, Roger, Krzyniu or even Gargula on this position. Even if he goes to Austria he’ll hardly get any playing time. Still, I’d like to see him in a playmaker position in one of the friendlies. Gargula proved that he can give a different dimension to the team, that is play a fake winger who cuts into the middle. And his corners were really impressive. As for Roger, he looked great in offense. However, Gazeta’s journalists write today that he’s useless in defence; he can pose threat only in posession. Moreover, other players must remember to play the ball directly to him and not rush him forward.
st-I have to disappoint you, both Sagan and Matusiak were really shitty. Lack of pace, lack of aggresiveness. It’s really hard to judge if even one of them can help the team. Zahorski wasn’t much better. Zuraw was the best but far from impressive. We still got 2 friendlies and who knows, maybe they’ll somehow find the form. At this point Ebi is the obvious choice for the position.
dl-Zewlak played as a dc so I think he’ll form partership with Bak during the Euros. We’re left with Bronowicki and Wawrzyniak as the only true left backs. I can’t wait to see Brono in one of the friendlies, his form is the biggest mystery for me. Wawrzyniak will hopefully only be a backup option.
Today’s Wyborcza write that Kokoszka, Pazdan and Matusiak are the ones to return home. Very possible, but I think Majewski and Sagan are also under threat.
@M.Zurawski
I heard that Wisla is looking for sponsorship deals in the USA. Do you think it’s possible? A good result bearing in mind that Biala Gwiazda played without the best players. Diaz showed some potential in the league but he was mainly a substitute. But a left back is hard to come by so he’ll probably stay at Wisla.

Sponsorship deal, who knows. The days where the Yanks had more money then they knew what to do with are fast fading, so investing in a federation that is, unfortunately, corruption plagued may not be something they are hot and hard on. I’ve heard that even some Polish businesses are shying away from associating themselves with football at the moment. But then, in the crazy multinational corporate world we live in i wouldn’t be shocked to hear they’ve dug up a few deals in States. Let’s hope. They more $s they have the more they can try to compete in the Champions League.

every player has his own style and with Rogerowski it’s only a matter of the team growing accustomed to him. his offensive specialization is not that big a problem, he may well be used in the later parts of games as a substitute or be 1st choice in those games we need to win. still, it doesn’t mean he won’t play 90mins vs Germs.
with Garugla on the form, Majewski seems to be going home. all the players you mentioned can play in his position, so there really is no need to let him take place of sb else. unless it really is Pazdan who will drop out, but I don’t think so, if I’m honest. generally, in the midfield we look quite rich: kuba will be ok for June 8., lobo is said to be regainning hs shine, krzyniu keeps his good shape, garguła can play as a winger as well, we have roger, żuraw - the same as with łobodzinski - impresses leo. that’s why I’m not that worried about our striking force. there still is ebi, for whom there’s no need to play in the midfield. and - as I hear - zahorski did’n actually play as a forward, so he still can be a valuable option.
what I’m beginning to be worried about is the left defence. Leo said bronowicki has 50% chance to stay, because of his injury, of course. In tha case I’d strongly recommend żewłak playing on that side, not in the centre. and wawrzyniak would be the only option for him.
but we shall know much more after the two frendlies. hopefully, the news is gonna be optimistic.
