On the eve of the Faroe Islands friendly
On the eve of the Faroe Island-Poland friendly…
Look, after that 1-0 loss to Lithuania that shook my faith a bit (yes, yes, second stringers, yadda yadda), i’m a bit too nervy to make any Faroe Islands jokes; actually, it looks like a nice place. We’ll see how well Team Polska handles FIFA’s 137th best team (and the chart shows they’ve even fallen two places; it seems Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan have been on a bit of a run lately).
No matter. Big news for Poland, of course, is the naming of the World Cup roster scheduled for Monday. Coach Janas told Polish media that the first eleven had been set and essentially confirmed that Wisla Plock forward Ireneusz Jeleń would also be named to the team. That sports geeks’ CNN, ESPN cited Jeleń’s nice play in the Saudi Arabia friendly as a strong factor in the decision. The nod would represent a seventh national team cap for Jeleń.
And, of course, there’s the goalkeeper question. Artur Boruc (Celtic) will mostly likely be chosen to start, doubtless to increase both the rates of coronary arrest and June church attendance in Poland. In spite of Jan Tomaszewski’s comments regarding Dudek’s manhood and the brilliant performance against Lithuania, Jerzy Dudek (Liverpool) remains the consensus #2 pick, with Tomasz Kuszczak (West Bromwich Albion) and Wojciech Kowalewski (Spartak Moscow) looking at the third spot. As reported, goalkeeper coach Jacek Kazimierski appears high on Kowalewski.
Finally, the Faroe Islands is sure to make for an ideal opening salvo in the war Poland’s hooligans have declared on Germany. This should be a true test for the red-and-white’s testosterone imbalanced. The dudes from the Faroe Islands look pretty scary…

Yeah, the Faroese in that painting look like they mean business! I read somewhere that several Brazilians play in the Faroe Islands domestic league. Which doesn’t have anything to do with the friendly, except to say that the Faroese like their football.
