Nothern Ireland-Poland Preview. A Typical Must Win Game.
Finally, after months of more or less important friendlies we’re back with World Cup qualifiers. The Bialo Czerwoni will play against Northern Ireland in Belfast tomorrow. This is a typical must win game, a game where we have to regain the points so stupidly lost against Slovakia. Leo Beenhakker’s main concerns are Kuba Blaszczykowski’s fitness and finding a replacement for Rafal Murawski in the middle of the field.
As usual, let’s see who made the best impression on Leo during the last week of training.
Goalkeepers: There two candidates for the nr 1 blouse: Artur Boruc and Lukasz Fabianski. It is Fabian who started in our last friendlies, but it is Boruc who plays regularly for his club. Leo refrained from announcing who is his current number 1, he wants the keepers to compete against each other. However, it is highly unlikely that our coach will risk picking a player who only sits on the bench at his club. I think Boruc is a better choice at the moment, he regained his good form, is more powerful and feels good in the five meter box. Moreover, as he plays in the SPL he’s got experience of competing against typical British teams which employ long, direct ball strategy. The Holy Goalie will always be a favourite to start, at least until Fabian wins the rivalry against Manuel Almunia.
Defenders: There won’t be any surprises in our defensive line: Michal Zewlakow and Dariusz Dudka in the centre, Marcin Wasilewski on the right side and Jakub Wawrzyniak on the left. All of them played regularly for their clubs in the last month and should be in good shape. Wasyl’s form is especially high, he’s got a great scoring record at Anderlecht and was praised numerous times by coaches during the week of training in Wronki. Kuba Wawrzyniak usually plays as a central defender for Panathinaikos, but he shouldn’t forget the year and a half he played as a left back for Legia. The only change in the line may occur if Dariusz Dudka is moved to the midfield. Then Bartosz Bosacki or Adam Kokoszka would start alongside Zewlak in the middle of our defense.
Midfielders: Will he play or won’t he? Kuba Blaszczykowski’s fitness was the main talking point among the Bialo Czerwoni fans in the last week. Leo admits that our tactics will depend on Kuba’s presence. Generally, there are two players who are sure to start: Jacek Krzynowek on the left wing and Mariusz Lewandowski in the middle. The selection of remaining players will depend on Kuba’s involvement in the game. Version nr 1: Kuba is fit enough to be included in the starting eleven. According to Leo we can then start with a more offensive player in the middle, in other words it is Roger who would partner M.Lewandowski. The remaining two places in the squad would be allocated to Robert Lewandowski (or Rafal Boguski playing behind the striker) and Ireneusz Jelen. Unfortunately, version nr 2 is more likely to happen: Kuba is left on the bench as a “difference maker”. In this case either Ireneusz Jelen or Robert Lewandowski will start on the right wing. The Auxerre striker played on this position during the World Cup in Germany, whereas the Lech starlet gained some right wing experience in Uefa Cup games against Udinese. Starting one of natural strikers on the wing would mean a need to include a more defensive player in the middle of the field. Lukasz Tralka is widely tipped as the one who’ll fill this gap. The Polonia Warsaw midfielder has no experience whatsoever in serious international competition, but Leo believes that he’s found a player perfectly suited to replace Rafal Murawski. Tralka wore the “first eleven” blouse during most of the training games. Tomasz Bandrowski is another option, but Leo was rather quiet about including the former Cottbus player in the starting lineup. Kuba’s inclusion in the squad will also determine Marcin Wasilewski’s style of play. Wasyl will be required to run forward frequently if he plays behind the Dortmund winger; he’ll play more defensively if he’s to cooperate with either Lewy or Jelonek. Finally, don’t expect to see Ebi Smolarek in the starting lineup. Leo admitted that his form is much harmed by the fact that he doesn’t play for Bolton and he was unable to bring him back to his peak during a week of training.
Attackers: We’ll see Ireneusz Jelen or Robert Lewandowski as our sole striker. It all depends on who’ll Leo find more suitable to replace Blaszczykowski on the right wing. In case Kuba starts, it is Lewy who is more suitable to play the link up role between the midfield and striker and Jelen who should be our “sting”. I think we may see both players changing positions very often which may come as a surprise for the Irish defense. Marek Saganowski is most likely to provide aid from the bench.
Poland’s probable squad: Boruc- Wawrzyniak, Zewlakow, Dudka, Wasilewski- Krzynowek, Tralka, M.Lewandowski, Roger, R.Lewandowski- Jelen
I feel confident before this game, apart from Kuba and Ebi all our players play regularly for their clubs and should perform well against the Irish. We have more talented players and once we force our style (possession play and short passing) upon Northern Ireland the game should be won. What we can’t do is turn the game of football into a war, the Irish are just waiting for that. They will want to spark chaos, we will have to control it. A win will mean that the qualification for the South African World Cup is still in our hands. It’s time for the Bialo Czerwoni to prove they’re better.
Our last trip to Belfast was a happy one. It also included a very touching moment when Krzyniu dedicated the goal to his recently deceased father.

Some news to cheer people up. Napoli, Juventus, and Inter are all interested in Bartosz Salamon. This could be our first truly world-class talent:

God damn. Boruc was just horrible. Fabianski in goal from now on. Hell I’d even prefer to see Zaluska or Przyrowski in goal now. And was it just me or was the pitch in horrible condition? It just as if the Irish knew they play the shittiest strategy ever (Long ball, its barely even a strategy. O lets hope one of my players gets to this punt before anyone else) so they purposely left the pitch as shit so you couldn’t play the ball along the ground. Aren’t there suppose to be rules about pitch condition?

I am shocked and embarrassed with the poor display. They did not want to win that game. They had no heart, soul, or determination. They can make all the excuses they want but they flat out stunk. The guys who started today’s game should be careful when they step off the plane in Poland.
They simply quit on Beenhakker. All or them with the exceptions of maybe Jelen and Saganowski. My only beef with him is why he didn’t start Robert Lewandowski up front with Jelen.
Another possible reason for such a disastrous display is that this game was fixed. From the first few minutes you could tell that this wasn’t going to be pretty. There is no other way to describe it. I could have gotten eleven kids from the park outside my house and they would have played better. I am sick and tired of this shit. FIFA needs to step up and take charge of the PZPN. The current group of people clearly shows that they are incapable of getting rid of the corruption that plagues the league and national team. The money we received from NIKE is probably going to the house Grzegorz Lato is building.

I think it’s over for Leo..maybe it’s for the best.
Boruc too…..wow. I always want Poland to win so much
And most often am left heartbroken. Where is the control
Of the ball? The speed? The aggresion. Why do the most
Promising players not make it onto the team?
I don’t want them to make it into the world cup unless
They well deserve it. Kuba made a difference out there..just
too late. Interested to see what happens tomorrow..

Zaraza is there a english version of the article on Salamon. I hoping to wake up to the news that Beenhakker is fired and Smuda is in.

I’m o.k. with anyone who is disappointed with the performance of the team. I’m also o.k. with anyone who wants Leo gone. I don’t think he wants to really be in Poland anymore. I think its just too difficult of a time. I couldn’t really blame him. I’m not so sure that this is the time to get rid of him. He’s not gonna coach in 2012 for certain. There’s still a chance for Poland to qualify for South Africa, and maybe getting a new coach wouldn’t help. After all, it doesn’t seem like there is anyone who is ready to take over. Also, don’t get rid of the older players, but find a way to utilize them better. And without a doubt, more offensive players. Whatever Leo’s trying to do isn’t working. Its like he wants to force something on the team that the team can’t handle for whatever reason. Maybe simplifying it like some people have said, to a 4-4-2 would help. And as for Boruc, I wouldn’t say he’s garbage. It seems like his personal life is effecting his professional life, at least on the national team. Giving Fabianski a shot isn’t a bad idea. He may not play for Arsenal, but if he’s good enough to sit on the bench for them, he must be capable of handling the national team. Besides, if Poland scored like 5 goals against Northern Ireland, none of the mistakes would have mattered. It just feels like the defensive weakness is totally exploited by a lack of offense. Hopefully Poland can beat San Marino big time in Kielce. Leo shouldn’t be sacked until Poland are certainly out of the WC. There’s still time to fix this, because the other teams in the group are blowing opportunities for three points as well.

I agree with adas, sacking Leo may not be the best decision at this particular moment. I am not so upset with him, I am however disgusted with how we played today… I would give Leo one more chance against San Marino, and if he does not motivate the lads, well we have to look for another coach. Hell, who knows, he may excite our boys and get them back on track for qualifing, only time will tell

^ ^ Boruc was on his heels too much. Fabianski for sure, or I’d bet if you got to see Kuszczak in action more, we’d be calling for him.

^ I’m shocked as well. It’s like N. Ireland said “Boo!” and we caved! Who is the leader of this team! – and I don’t mean Leo, and don’t blame him. There is no reason to play so gittery. Maybe they don’t really feel like a team, because they didn’t play like one.

I hope they keep Leo.The preperation time was not enough considering the injuries and late roster additions, cohesion is crucial. The defense needs adjusting, there are just to many times the goalie is left alone to fend for himself, that is THE #1 need. The club as a whole had an off day. There will be another important game for this team during this 2010 World Cup qualification.

Kacinski: Very good analysis, I’m totally agree with your view.
This team has clearly showed that they don’t want to play for Leo. All players on a team can’t be bad at the same time without reason. And we can’t replace all the player of the team, it is a lot easier to replace the coach. You can’t tell that Leo made a better job than the others coachs before. It was the first time that we was qualified in Euro? So what? The qualification in worldcup in 2002 and 2006 was less important? Enough is enough,we can’t give more chance to Leo,Goodbye Leo!
We can’t blame boruc on the own goal, the field was very bad, and all players which have a little bit of experience knows that you never give a pass to your goalkeeper in the line with your goal, never! If you look in slow motion, you can clearly view the ball has a curious rebound just when Boruc was trying to hit it. The fields was very bad, in this game we saw the N.Ireland goalkeeper miss also the ball, and Roger and Dudka strangely fall down. Fabianski can’t replace Boruc only because we think that he is a good player. A goalkeeper has to play to be good and confident. If we want to replace Boruc, the only one actually who could replace him is Zaluska, but but I am convinced that Boruc is still the best goalkeeper that we have.Fabianski and Kuszczak are very good, and are backup in very big teams, but they don’t play, they have to do the same thing than the other players like Janczyk: To Change team and play, after that they could play for the NT.

not gunna waste my time writing..awful..thats all

not gunna waste my time writing..awful..thats all

I usually don’t like overreactions but this situation calls for almost a complete overhaul.
-Dudka should not be playing a center back role.
-We need to get Kokoszka acclimated with NT play, starting with the San Marino game.
-Roger cant play in the middle of the field on a NT level, not consistantly at least.
-A replacement needs to be found for M. Lewandowski who was much better
when he played simpler (almost like he thinks of himself as a superstar now). Someone who I like for this position is Kazmierczak
-Lets not overreact with Boruc though. He screwed up, twice, even so it was just as much dumb luck. And who the hell plays a game at twilight in a non enclosed stadium. Fabianski is not playing regularly so no one really knows what is going on there.
-We missed Murawski more then anyone today. No one was capable of holding on to the ball in the midfield.
Even though we have a foreign coach we are playing typical polish ball of kicking it as far as you can blindly. I would think long and hard before I fire Leo though because I am sure he is not advocating the stupid way we played but something has to be done.
Smuda is the coach that can make this happen. Look at the style that is played in Poznan, nothing like typical polish football.

This match was so horrendous that I actually don’t want Poland to go to South Africa. Save the emberrassement, and concentrate on EURO 2012. Throw away Krzynowek, and Zewlakow, and other old farts, give Boruc some extreme therapy (He’s still a quality keeper, but completely fucked up psychologically, I can see it, I’ve been trough that myself. Fabianski isn’t good enough.). Add Salomon, Janota and other youngsters to the team. Boot Leo, he clearly doesn’t give a shit anymore. Awesome that we went to EURO 2008, but after that It just went worse and worse. Add Smuda or some other ambitious coach.
This match showed me why so many Poles want to play for Germany. Because seriously, I was tempted to stop caring for Poland at all and go support the Netherlands fulltime. The match was THAT BAD. Of course I will always support the Bialo Czerwoni, but yesterday’s match was just a slap in the face of all Polish supporters.
I feel sorry for all the supporters that paid something for probably one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’m dead serious.

I haven’t fully recovered from the game, still digesting it. I was extremely depressed yesterday, but when I looked at the table today I regained some faith (maybe it’s a form of self deception). I should collect my thoughts in the evening and then write a note. Thanks for all the comments, if only players cared as much as we do…

This surely was the most inept display by Poland for many a years against a team that would probably be struggling in mid table obscurity in England’s League 1. What does that say about us?? We have hit the bottom of the well. This performance was nothing short of scandalous resulting in us being the laughing stock of europe. Like Tomasz I looked at the table and still see a chance to quaify albeit through the play offs. Self deception indeed. Boruc’s two blunder’s aside the whole team were a disgrace unable to string two passes together but more worrying was the lack of hunger to win this game. Boruc needs to see a good psychiatrist and sort himself out whilst Leo will undoubtedly walk after wednesday making way for someone who will be tasked to salvage something from a campaign that went wrong from day 1 against Sovenia. Wstyd kurwa!!!!

Ya, I would also like to add that I hope Boruc’s brain farts don’t lead to everyone forgeting just how putrid everyone else played.

There is no excuse for Boruc. A mistake like that cannot occur on this level. He had time to settle the ball instead of trying one time it. The pitch was thick and the ball jumped over his leg, he either took it for granted or doesn’t concentrate enough. He let his team down. The defense is horrible. The first goal the midfielder on the right was beaten twice before the long cross and nobody (Wawrzyniak) was marking the goal scorer. The 2nd goal by Evans No. 3 (that’s a No. 3, no one with a number 3 on their shirt should beat our defender in the box and score) was again a lack of energy or concentration especially by Wasilewski (who is a terrible defender). I think you cannot blame this game on the lack of offense. The Irish came out faster and more determined than us, and were quicker to the for more that 85% of the chances. It all starts from the backline and our backline is horrendous. It doesn’t matter how great our strikers will be, if the back can’t hold and control the ball we will never win.

Didn’t finish my comment on Boruc:
No reason to one time that ball. Settle and then get it out, he had plenty of time.
Funny thing is he did the same exact thing later on in the game and made another bad kick (at least he connected with the ball).
The fans at Europa (in Greenpoint, NYC) just laughed and cynically applauded after he got it out the second time.
No excuse to play like this on this level!

it was the shittiest performance of our team that I can actually remember. the number and idiocy of mistakes was way beyond any conceivable limit! We were not a team yesterday, and we didn’t really want to win. there was no confidence in us, even though we’ve much more quality of the two sides. We didn’t get into a physical fight with them, but also didn’t put forward anything instead. as a result, we looked pathetic.
but I agree with adas. outregous as our performance was, drastic measures are no solution.
I’d keep beenhakker until we’re definitely out of the race for WC 2010. let him take the whole resposibility for the qualification and either he can turn it over once again for us and take the credit, or fail and take the blame. we still have a reasonable chance, on paper ofcourse.
I wouldn’t rid the old players. However sad it seems, we simply have no better options, thery are no young Poles playing in good leagues regularly that we haven’t checked in the NT. besides old or young, all our players were crappy in the game, so it’s rather a matter of motivation and concentrating the team than the age.
It’s a goog idea to play with 2 attackers. Maybe not against all opponents, but at least in the games we are the favourites. when we switched to 4-4-2 towrds the end, our play finally looked like it should have looked. we just didn’t have creative DM’s and were left with roger to create a chance. jeleń couldn’t keep the ball and lewandowski was out of position. he’s much more dangerous closer to the goal.
finally, boruc shouldn’t have palyed yesterday and the sad conclusions you guys made about him taking seriously all the media fuss about him, i agree with. he just should let it go and focus on the game. but i don’t know if leo could see the danger of boruc’s poor form. maybe artur looked confident for the last week, he had decent games for celtic, too. anyway, now he should be dropped at least for a few months. sort yourself out, artur. sadly, our second goalie shitted his pants. I mean literally. he got diarreah or whatever it’s called. It’s not a premise to count on fabianski in the important games, I’m serious. even thoguh, leo talked a lot before the game about how great keepers he has and howunfair he feels when he must bench any of them. well, to me it seems the only one up to the task could’ve been załuska. only could’ve…

I wouldnt ever start Jelen as a lone striker he isnt able to keep the ball. I would play him with Brozek together because Brozek is able to control the play better and Jelen is more chaotic in his play. There should be a rotation between them two Lewandowski. Then bring Janczyk as a sub instead of having Sagan or Sosin. Salomon should be brought in even at such a young age he def has much more technical skill then all of out CMs.He just needs to get there physically. We cant forget about Orbaniak that will hopefully solve the left wing problem. Then Kokoz should play in the San Marino game since he does play in Seria B he knows the type of play. If he shows something start him in the next friendlies and he should replace Dudka which isnt a natural CD. Every since euro 2008 the defense has been shit because he has been playing and Bak has been out. Zewlakow is ok for now he just had a bad day.

Our defenders are bad, very bad. We must never make a pass into the area between the two goal posts. All time the ball was in our zone that will be the total panic, no control, no one want the ball, we had the chance that the NIrelande players were that bad that they could not take advantage of all the situation that our defenders had gave them. We can’t tell that we haven’t a good player in front, Jelen and Saganowski take the advantage of the few chances that they had, but our midfielders were as bad as our defenders were bad.
But when all the players play bad you must take a look at the coaches bench.

This game leads me to believe that they took bribes to throw the game. Many of the mistakes very a little too obvious, almost predetermined. I bet none of the players would be able to look you in the face and admit that they tried their hardest. They are an embarrassment to the country. They don’t deserve to wear the eagle on their shirts.
Lets not raise our expectations on Salamon too high without actually seeing him play. We are partly to blame when we see one of our youngsters do well abroad we automatically assume that hes a can’t miss prospect. We need to wait and see what this particular kid can actually do before we even mention him for the national team.
