No Małecki, No Problem.

maleckiPatryk Małecki has just overtaken Sławomir Peszko on my list of the most irritating Polish footballers. He was always high on this list, but thanks to the game against Skonto Ryga he finally managed to get past Peszko (maybe it’s because I don’t have a chance to watch the latter as often as I used to). Overall it was a better than an average performance by Wisła team, but Małecki’s poor form and lack of character improvement is very alarming.

Patryk Małecki was one of the leaders of Wisła Kraków last season and one of the reasons behing their championship title. Though, to be honest, seven goals is not a superb achievement in the league of Ekstraklasa’s status. Nevertheless, Małecki was heralded as the Polish leader of international Wisła and the press continually promoted him as a serious candidate to play in the national team. Franz Smuda was criticized over and over again for omitting Małecki on his list of call ups. Personally, as much as I don’t like Smuda’s stubborness regarding some players (Boruc, Majewski), I didn’t find it a great problem that Małecki wasn’t in the national team. Or a problem worth discussing in detail. Wisła’s game against Skonto showed why exactly I’ve never considered Małecki worthy of regular call ups. First of all, I think his input in the Biała Gwiazda’s performances in overrated. It’s Maor Melikson that’s currently the leader of Wisła on the field; every offensive move, every danger that Wisła caused in front of Skonto’s goal was caused by Melikson. He’s simply a more skillful player than Małecki. Surprisingly, Melikson also looked much better physically than Małecki. Players like Iliev, Pajic, Sobolewski and Wilk were also much more useful than Patryk, who couldn’t find himself a place on the field, couldn’t get past Skonto’s defenders and made bad decisions. However, it’s not his poor form that makes Małecki a weak candidate for the national team (after all, he may improve in the course of the season). His lack of mental improvement is what I find most irritating. Maybe you remember those two situations from the Skonto game: Małecki cheered and wanted to shake hands with the red carded Skonto player, Małecki offending and provoking the Skonto defender who cleanly dispossesed him of the ball. What kind of an asshole does things like that? The truth is that Małecki is a dirty player, he looks for a confrontation in each single game, be it with opposition players or fans. In other words, he’s a boor who can bring the team more damage than success. Especially on a serious international stage where such behaviour is quickly eliminated. Having in mind the fact that we’ve got Błaszczykowski, Peszko and Grosicki ready to play on the right wing I will lose no sleep over Małecki and his absence in the Euro 2012 squad.

glik torinoOther news: Kamil Glik moved from Palermo to Serie B’s Torino. It’s a lower league, but this transfer will give Glik an opportunity to play regular football in a country where defensive play is mostly appreciated. What’s important, Torino’s new coach is Giampiero Ventura, the one who gave Glik a lot of playing time at Bari. This means that Kamil already have the coach’s trust and should be an important first team player at his new club. He rejected the offer from Glasgow Rangers in order to stay in Italy.

Śląsk Wrocław won the game against Dundee 1-0 thanks to the latest transfer Johan Voskamp’s goal

Grzegorz Sandomierski is supposed to travel to Everton for trials. Jan Mucha should tell him that it’s not the best idea.

The press is speculating that Udinese will soon make an official offer for Ariel Borysiuk. Especially after they sold Gokhan Inler to Napoli.

Szcesczny saved a penalty today against Udinese in CL, I didn’t see it but it was important as Udinese could have tied up on aggregate at 2-2.

I hope this Perquis drama gets sorted out, we need all the decent defenders we can get. I definitely agree 100% with the posts above about youth training and talent development. Proper coaching and attention would go a long long way.

Yeah, good on Trab and our fellow Poles getting a shot at CL football. Too bad only Glowacki and Mierzejewski will see the field. However, Pawel Brozek might sniff some time while Piotr is still injured.

This article states Perques still is interested in playing for Poland but that he does not have all of the necessary documents for citizenship.

Great game for Legia today in Moscow. They were losing 0-2 early, but came back and tied it before half-time with goals from Kucharczyk and a beauty from Rybus. The won it 3-2 with a goal in added time by, appropriately enough, Janusz gol! Go Legia, now we have at least 2 teams in the Europa League group stage.

fantastic result for Legia, wish I could’ve watched the game instead of having to work. Good that Rybus is producing on the field, he needs to be much more consistent.

So despite Wisla’s loss, Polish football is doing better this year compared to last in the European Cups, as we have 2 teams in the Europa League group stage compared to 1 last year.

Awesome come-back win for Legia, I watched the entire match, and had a good feeling since the start of the match, even after they were down 0-2 I had a feeling they would come back to at least tie the game. Congrats to Legia!

Is it just me of Wisla looked a bit shell shocked? The APEOL fans were insane and it was a wicked atmosphere. APOEL looked the better side, more polished all around. Wisla looked raw, which makes sense since most of their squad does not have cup experience. When did Diaz and Jaliens forget how to play football? But Wisla will need to start beating clubs like this if they want to be taken seriously. They missed out on a lot of money but this may be better for them in the long run because they would have a tough time in the group stage with the big boys.

Regarding Perquis, the football media in this country is borderline retarded. Its just tabloid style reporting and journalism. Its a complete fucking joke.

They should have a team of people helping Perques get the proper documents, there out thier a normal country would have gotten him everything he needs esp. a country that is hosting a tournament and are short staffted.

Well, here are the groups!

Group C
PSV Eindhoven (NED)
Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC (ISR)
FC Rapid Bucureşti (ROU)
Legia Warszawa (POL)

Group K
FC Twente (NED)
Fulham FC (ENG)
Odense BK (DEN)
Wisła Kraków (POL)

I’m thinking that both groups will be somewhat tough… But looking at the other groups, it seems that every group is equally difficult (minus Shamrock Rovers Group… good luck to them. lol)

Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)
FC Rubin Kazan (RUS)
PAOK FC (GRE)
Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL)

@ JZ thanks for the link. How pathetic was that penalty call?! I really am disturbed by the way some of these men are cheating the game. It’s embarrassing.

I didn’t get to see the whole Legia game and was just now stunned (thanks JZ) to see the shameful play-acting of that spartak player who pretended to get fouled by Borysiuk! Spartak deserved to lose on home soil after that.

Anyone have a link to Szczesny’s penalty save?

So is Slask done and out of it now? Thay seemed completely outmatched by rapid bucaresti both times.

@ J:
Yes, Slask is finished in Europe this year. You’re right, they were completely outmatched and outclassed by Rapid Bucharest…..not exactly a world-class opponent. I think Legia and Wisla both have decent chances of advancing, but they could also both shit the bed. Either way, they are underdogs and anything more they do should be seen as a pleasant surprise for Polish football.

Last year Lech made it out of their group, this year we have double the chances, so its an improvement thus far, lets hope at least one of them makes it to the next round!
