Majewski Transfer Saga Part Two: West Brom.

majewski-groclin-in-action.jpgIt can be a long summer for Radoslaw Majewski, one of the hottest talents in Polish football. After a reported interest from Blackburn (which wasn’t really there to be honest) Super Express writes today about an offer from West Bromwich Albion, a team that has just won the Championship. I’m sure that now the player will find it easy to concentrate on his performances for Groclin.

It all looks almost settled according to the Polish tabloid. West Brom’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, will meet tomorrow with Groclin’s owner Zbigniew Drzymala and present him with an offer of 3M€. Groclin is willing to accept the offer as it would be one of the highest transfers from the Polish league. Great, the deal is done and everybody can go home. I just find it a bit strange that I couldn’t find anything about it on English sites. Can a team like West Brom really have 3M to splash on an unproven midfielder from the Polish league? Do they want to spend this amount of money on a player who is 1,70m tall and weights 69 kilos? Not a big threat for the likes of Essien, Mascherano or Zokora right? And as far as I know Championship playing style is not based on technical skills and beautiful no look passes but rather on pure physical strength (West Brom’s best striker is Robert Bednar: 1,90m and 85 west_bromwich_albion.jpgkilos; well known for all the SPL fans). On the other hand, maybe they want to change their style after advancing to the Premiership and Majewski is a player that can help them do it. After all, English teams nowadays spend horrendous amounts of money on average players (just look at Sunderland and Fulham’s transfers) so why wouldn’t they pay 3M for a talent like Majewski? As you can see, there are both arguments for and against the validity of this news. And if 3M is really on the table than, well, all I can say is sell, sell, sell.

Not to be left behind Super Express, Przeglad Sportowy reports about an interest from Serie A managers considering Majewski. Moreover, they also contradict SE’s info by claiming that there are no serious offers for the young playmaker (only some time ago they wrote about a serious offer from Blackburn, he he). Remember, it’s only May, what if he plays well in the Euro champs? Will we have news like ‘Majewski in ManUtd’? Can’t wait for that to be honest, but for now let’s wait and see if this whole West Brom offer is for real or is it just journalists’ wishful thinking once again.

Yes, the transfer season is a beautiful thing, not to mention the tourney to spur them on. I’ve officially booked half of June off, can’t wait.

Modric went to Spurs from Dymano Zagrzeb for 10M. I believe that Polish teams would fetch better prices for players like Majewski or Blaszczykowski if they were a little bit more patient. Why even entertain offers from teams like WBA when Majewski is about to be named for Poland’s squad for EURO 08? I know Mr. Drzymala is a very prudent businessman which leads me to believe this rumor is complete BS (Super Express !!!). Anyways I really enjoy reading your blog. Good stuff.

Tomasz, There was recently a debate in England as to whether you can get out of the championship by playing fluent, passing football as most teams in this division play a direct, long ball approach. West Brom have played fluent, passing football all season and have won the Championship by doing this (We have been likened to Arsenal in our style of play). Tony Mowbray will not buy any player who does not have technical ability that is why we are linked to players like Majewski.

@M.Zurawski
I’ve also already announced that I’m not available in June. You have to have your priorities set, right?
@Tomek
Modric case is an extreme one, in my opinion. I think that the last time when a player from a minor league was valued as high was when Sheva and Rebrov were leaving Dynamo Kiev. There was a huge hype about Modric in whole of Europe. Sadly, not a lot people outside Poland know about Majewski, Blaszczykowski, Brozek or Dudka so we can’t expect high prices for them, 3M is the highest we can expect for me. Moreover, it’s hard to judge player’s potential only on the basis of the Polish league and Majewski didn’t play in CL or important nt matches. I think we’re still to learn about the scale of his talent.

That’s really interesting, now the Majewski rumour holds water a bit more. I didn’t have a chance to watch West Brom this year so I based my opinion on what I saw while watching the Saints last season or Championship teams in FA Cup this season. On the other hand, I should have known that Tony Mowbray doesn’t play direct, long balls. I remember his Hibernian team very well as I saw some of their games; he managed to collect a lot of talent (O’Connor, Riordan, Brown, Caldwell, Whitaker, Murphy, Sproule, Thomson) that was later sold for a lot of money. They had this passing style. Wasn’t Mowbray the one who brought Zemanna to Hibs; Majewski resembles him a bit.
