Leo Beenhakker Leaves Six Casualties As He Cuts Poland’s Euro Squad To 26 Names.

leo-announcing-the-squad-2.jpgWow, that was the bomb that we were waiting for. We’ve got a first huge surprise in our Euro squad; we won’t see Arkadiusz Radomski (Austria Vienna) wearing Bialo Czerwoni jersey in June. Other casualties are Wojciech Kowalewski, Michal Golinski, Dawid Janczyk, Artur Wichniarek and Lukasz Piszczek.

Leo Beenhakker announced today the names of six players that won’t have a chance to represent Poland in June’s Euro Champs. One name is quite controversial in my opinion: Arkadiusz Radomski. That’s Austria Vienna’s central defender that can also play as a defensive midfielder. He was a part of the team in the qualifying campaign, played in the last friendly against the USA and looked destined for a final call up. It’s a strange decision by Leo as we lose an experienced player who can cover two positions in the squad. The lack of Radomski in the squad can be attributed to his physical problems this season, however he played regularly in the last couple of months in the Austrian league. I’d feel more confident with him on the field than with Kokoszka or Wawrzyniak to be honest.

radomski.jpgOther than that, no huge surprises. Wojciech Kowalewski (Korona Kielce) was always destined to be the 4th choice keeper. Michal Golinski (Zaglebie Lubin) was called up earlier mainly because of Leo’s need to have a left footed central midfielder in the squad. With the inclusion of a new Pole Roger we don’t need one anymore. Three strikers were eliminated this time by Leo (I expected only two). Dawid Janczyk (CSKA Moscow) never stood a chance as he was injured and has yet to play a game for CSKA after returning from injury. It is not very surprising that the names of Artur Wichniarek (Arminia Bielefeld) or Lukasz Piszczek (Hertha Berlin) were crossed out, it’s more surprising that Marek Saganowski is in the squad after scoring only three goals for Southampton this term and having generally a poor season. Piszczek got his chances in the games against Foreign Stars and the USA but didn’t use them. Recent regular play for Hertha couldn’t save him. Wichniarek, apart from Radomski, can feel most disappointed as he wasn’t really given a proper chance. He played only 45 minutes under Leo in the game against the Czech Republic. To be honest, I expected King Artur to be given a chance during the training camp, but it seems that he just doesn’t fit into Leo’s philosophy. As a result I got my latest squad predictions wrong as I was correct only in three cases.

leo-heavy-thinking.jpgHere’s Poland’s penultimate squad for the Euros, biggest surprises being Kokoszka, Pazdan and Saganowski:

Goalkeepers: Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow), Tomasz Kuszczak (Manchester United), Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal London)

Defenders: Jacek Bak (Austria Vienna), Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht Brussels), Pawel Golanski (Steaua Bucharest), Mariusz Jop (FC Moscow), Adam Kokoszka (Wisla Krakow), Jakub Wawrzyniak (Legia Warsaw), Michal Zewlakow (Olympiakos Pireus), Grzegorz Bronowicki (Red Star Belgrade)

Midfielders: Dariusz Dudka, Wojciech Lobodzinski (both Wisla Krakow), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund), Mariusz Lewandowski (Shachtar Donieck), Rafal Murawski (Lech Poznan), Lukasz Gargula (PGE GKS Belchatow), Jacek Krzynowek (VfL Wolfsburg), Euzebiusz Smolarek (Racing Santander), Radoslaw Majewski (Groclin Grodzisk Wlkp.), Michal Pazdan (Gornik Zabrze), Roger (Legia Warsaw)

Attackers: Maciej Zurawski (AE Larissa), Tomasz Zahorski (Gornik Zabrze), Radoslaw Matusiak (Wisla Krakow), Marek Saganowski (FC Southampton)

I welcome all the Poland’s faithful to post their views (and objective supporters as well of course).

Couple comments on Leo’s cuts:

Kowalewski- This was expected. It was always going to be Boruc, Fabianski and Kuszczak.

Janczyk- If not for the injury I think he would have made the squad.

Wichniarek- Something tells me this is a personality issue. He plays regularly in the Bundesliga and scores some goals. But notice he even was overlooked by Engel and Janas as well. Obviously there is something beneath the surface here.

Piszczek- I was dissapointed to see him cut. He was starting to make some headway in the Bundesliga but he really hurt himself with his performances against the OE Foreign Stars and the US. I expect to see him in our WC 2010 campaing.

Golinski- He was a long shot anyways. Roger getting Polish citizenship sealed his fate.

Radomski- Well, this was the biggest surprise. Leo stated several times that one of the most important criteria for choosing the squad was who is in excellent game shape since we will be playing at the highest level every 4 days. Coming back from injury Radomski wasn’t ready for it.

PS. Dudka needs to shut his trap. I read in the Polish press that he is questioning why Pazdan was called up and he has been making some ambiguous comments about Roger. As they say in Polish “sodowka odbila”.

Croatia will be a breeze to defeat. They play like crap and everyone thought that they were crap until they knocked England out of qualifying. Wow, its like England was ever really good to begin with. Just because some English guys slit there wrists while watching their team loose doesnt make a great team. Most Polish players are better then their Croatian counterparts (especially Boruc) and Don Leo is just about the best tactician that I have ever seen. The Germany game will probobly be a loss but getting out of the group will be no problem. As for the squad kowalewski was a definate go I mean there are better goalkeepers to choose from in that situation like Malarz, Szamotulski, Zaluska. Piszczek just doesnt seem to find the net at all. Janczyk im dissapointed to not see but doesnt have enough experiance. Pazdan I was completely surprised with, I know he wont play but Leo could have brought on some other more experianced player instead.

To euro 2008 fan

Croatia are not as good as you think they are. They are a strong side no doubt about that but im just wandering if the serious injury to Eduardo could leave Croatia goal shy? (Eduardo did score 10 goals in qualifying and somehow managed to score goals even when Croatia were playing badly)

I think poland is capable of beating the Croats – we done it before – World cup warm up friendly 2006

Poland 1 – 0 Croatia SMOLAREK

I predict the same scoreline again!

For real, Croatia, you are a Shakespeare. I particularly liked the
“PS. POLAND SUCKS”
and
“hahahah”
So articulate, in depth, emotional, you’re an amazing writer man. It always makes my day to see your well thought-out and analytical posts. The fact that you’re embarrassing yourself and sort of looking disabled in a mental sort of way is also very selfless. Just know that we appreciate you :)

Man. We’ve been told. Smolarek is shit. Our Jerseys are ugly. We like British penis (you should count yourself lucky, Brits) The Germans invaded us in ‘45. :) We only held out three days. And then it gets confusing, and unfortunate again for the innocent Brits, because while, apparently, we like to suckle their genitals, we can’t. Croatia, you are a brilliant yet confusing mind. But really, what do you have against the British? And again, thank you for your correspondence. Soon we’ll have enough to publish a booklet of poetry from you.

Back to euro 2008 fan

Croatia did beat us 4-1 WAY BACK IN 1998 when you had really good players ie. Suker, boban etc. etc. i agree with you on that BUT THAT WAS 10 years ago. We have a completely diferent team and so do you so you cant compare those results. The latest game we beat you 1-0 when you didnt have your side ‘B’ as you claim cause all your first team players were playing that day , modric krancjar olic etc. etc. So i will answer nicely back to you too! FUCK YOU!!! We will destroy you!!!

To euro 2008 fan

That wasnt a ‘lucky’ goal what you talking about?!?! A beautiful header off the post! You maybe be right Prso wasnt playing that day but it was still a decent croatian side. This argument can go on forever and frankfully i dont care about Croatia if you qualify if you dont – i really dont care. The only thing i care about is winning against the Germans! Fuck everything else!

I am croatian, and love to support croatia in any football game. i think the poland match will be the toughest for both teams. poland has great players and so does croatia. and we shouldnt be slaging each other. its all about fair play and respect. so respect to poland. and lets hope for a great match in june.
