Lech Poznan Becomes The Last Hope Of Polish Football.
Still got no internet at home, but I just had to comment on that. What an incredible game by Lech Poznan! The way they advanced to the Uefa Cup group stage was just magnificient. The best game by a Polish club since Wisla Krakow’s heroics in 2002/2003 season. In the times of struggle between PZPN (Polish FA) and Polish government this is finally something that the fans can cheer about.
Lech Poznan- Austria Vienna 4:2 (9′ Rengifo, 85′ Peszko, 93′ R.Lewandowski, 120′ Murawski- 61′ Acimovic, 100′ Hattenberger)
This was a night to remember. Especially if you watched the game in a Poznan pub full of local fans as I did. It was a great experience; it can only be compared to Poland-Porugal game two years ago. I may not be the biggest Lech fan, but I joined the others in constant chanting and, well, abuse aimed at the Austria players. What followed was a night full of drunken Lech fans and a constant party in clubs all around the city. Needless to say, I didn’t have a good day at work on Friday. But let’s return to football. At the moment, Lech is the most spectacular team in Poland. Yes, they’ve got a shaky defence. Yes, a classy team wouldn’t concede a goal only minutes after they scored. Fortunately, they make up for it with a tremendous firing power. Slawomir Peszko was unstoppable on the right wing. Robert Lewandowski showed that he’s got a great first touch and is not afraid to shoot from distance. Rafal Murawski…..shit, if Muras played like this in the national team we could have easily get rid of Mariusz Lewandowski or Dariusz Dudka. Grzegorz Wojtkowiak knows when to go forward, but he still needs to work on his crosses. Finally, Piotr Reiss confirmed his status as a Lech legend. This weekend Lech will host Legia in one of the biggest classics of the Polish league. Will the Poznan team be able to repeat their performance? You just have to watch it.
Wisla Krakow- Tottenham Hotspur 1:1 (Pawel Brozek 83′- Glowacki (og) 58′)
Wisla’s performance was an antithesis to the Lech’s one. No plan, no character, no belief. I know, the result is not a bad one, especially when you look at how much money Tottenham spent on new players. Still, Wisla could’ve easily gone through; it’s not a coincidence that the Spurs are at the bottom of the Premiership table. It seems that Biala Gwiazda gave too much respect to the Londoners. The plan was to use the wings as often as possible. What we actually seen were long balls played from defence and counting that Pawel Brozek will somehow win a header with Ledley King (stupid, I know). Wisla played well only throughout the last 10-15 minutes of both halves, which just wasn’t enough. Any positives? Pawel Brozek scored a confidence boosting goal; Wojciech Lobodzinski is slowly regaining his Zaglebie Lubin form. Negatives? I’m gonna explode with anger next time someone mentions Glowacki as a potential national team saviour. The guy just has a talent for fucking up almost all major games he played in (exaggeration, I know).
Other news: You have all probably learnt about the struggle between PZPN and the Polish government. As expected, FIFA took the side of our beloved Leśne Dziadki (any English translation that would fit?) and raised an ultimatum. Generally, if the government doesn’t leave Listkiewicz and his mafia alone then we’ll be banned from all international competition (starting with next WC qualifying games). Huge thanks to FIFA and Uefa for helping to keep our football in Middle Ages. However, the show isn’t over yet. Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said that he’s not afraid of any ultimatums and wants the PZPN problem finally resolved, regardless of consequences. Who’ll have bigger balls? Hopefully the government.
Three changes in our squad for the Czech Republic and Slovakia games took place. Piotr Polczak, Radoslaw Majewski and Lukasz Piszczek are all injured and were replaced by Tomasz Jodlowiec, Lukasz Gargula and Wojciech Lobodzinski. Good that all major players are available at the moment.

as for the lech’s victory, there’s one hero you forgot to mention, tomasz, it’s franz! is is all his acheivement that even after such a punch on the face as the 2nd conceded goal was, kolejorz went on going for a goal. i wouldn’t say it was technically the best game since wisła’a play in the uefa cup, but for sure the most remarkable one. and i’m especially happy with lewandowski, and his 1 on 1 play, reception of the ball, and the goal he scored after a few goalless games.
i’m also furious with głowacki, but it would be unfair to blame him for the result. it wasn’t that easy ball to clear, especially with a header, which głowa attempted for no obvious reason. and the whole team blew it up. the spurs were really poor, but wisła had no balls. mr. skorża, here’s to you, you have a few months to fix it, and it’s not only a matter of new transfers coming in. bring some flamboyance in!
finally, the pzpn saga. sadly, there’s no positive side of the story, as far as i’m concerned. i’d sacrifice a tourament or two to claer the mess in polish football, but i’d like to know how our government is going to do it, and i mean some detalis. any new authorities of our fa are gonna be chosen by the same people as in the past and beside that, where will we get the new people from? we need a whole training system with know-how, who is gonna provide it, mr. drzewiecki? getting rid of the leśne dziadki is by all means a great thing, but it’s simply not enough. so far i haven’t heard a word about what to do next.

I hope Tusk stands his ground. We will never move forward as long as Liskiewicz and his cronies are in charge, we’ll just keep sinking further and further. Right now, even leagues from Slovakia, Denmark, Bulgaria are ranked higher than Poland… If we crumble under FIFA pressure, then Finland, Latvia and Bosnia will overtake us in a couple years.
I really don’t care if FIFA cancel the matches against the Czech Republic and Slovakia, our #1 priority should be ousting the Lesne Dziadki. In the long term Polish football will be better off.
There’s been some talk that FIFA will also take away Euro 2012. I seriously doubt it. And if they do, it’s going to cost them too. One of the main reasons they chose us is because they wanted to expand/grow the market in Eastern Europe.

It’s a shame that fucking politics get in the way of the game of football.

Our league is getting beat by Slovakia, Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria.
Our national team is afraid of San Marino…
And you still think the Polish government should not get involved???

@ Zaraza
What I really meant was that it’s too bad there are people out there who lead to the type of corruption the PZPN suffers from. I think its great for the Polish govt to make this stand. But it’s a shame politics were involved in the first place… football is a game. Not something for the government to have to deal with corruption over.

All signs point to FIFA and UEFA supporting corruption. Nothing seems to say otherwise. Why do they need to get involved in government politics. They think that money gives them authority to do whatever they please with football in Poland. It is not just Poland, other countries were subject to this mafia type bullshit.
The current PZPN is a bunch of incompetent clowns. FIFA and UEFA know this and want to keep it this way. They are able to control them by throwing a couple of dollars their way from time to time to keep the happy. Did you guys see how fucking nervous the assholes from the PZPN were in interviews on the news. I don’t know what is more embarrassing, their stupidity or how shocked and nervous they are to be met with resistance from the government. It would seem like their buddies at FIFA and UEFA will not be able to help them out this time.
As for the corruption or failure to address the issue, shouldn’t some be held responsible? Wouldn’t that mean prison time of major fines for those involved or those who covered it up? I can’t wait to see the final result of this debacle.
Better days are ahead.

Everyone who supports the crackdown on the PZPN should sign this petition:
http://www.petitiononline.com/PZPN/petition.html
I don’t know how effective these petitions are but there’s no harm trying. Hopefully it will make the Polish government realize that there is strong support for this action and that they should not back down.
I doubt FIFA and UEFA will care what the fans have to say, they’re rotten to the core.
Hieronim, sorry I misunderstood your post.

check it out, polish players playing euro 08 soccer on ps3 lol

I was thrilled with Lech win over Austria and I was hearing all this hoopla about how great Lech was playing. On Saturday I was able to get my hands on the torrent with the game and finally I was able to see it.
It was gutsy performance by Lech but it was far away from great. We have to realize that it was only Austria Wieden they played against and that not all look that good. Lech is not ready to compete yet with better teams and there were only few player I could give high notes for this game. Tomek you said that Murawski performance should put him into NT. I can’t disagree more. He was one of the weakest players on the field. Sure he did score in last minute and become a game hero but OMG. Don’t tell me he was any good. I was watching reply last night and he looks slow and he had tons of bad passes and lost balls. The 3 best players for Lech were Lewandowski, Renfigio and Peszko. Reiss is an idiot for trying to force penalty in OT. If he did not take this stupid dive he could score EZ goal. Is this is what he wants to teach younger players? Peszko did the same few minutes later but I can forgive him.
The best part about Lech is their fans. Lech supporters are amazing. I think with that kind of fallowing and big stadium Lech is destined to do great things in near future.

Lech Poznan can do it. I hope. Arkadiusz Glowacks is a weenie because he loet in an own goal. How fast is the internet in Poland? I told you that there was corruption in the PZPN system. How is Poland doing amidst the financial crisis in America? I hope Tomasz gets good internet at an affordable price so that he can do more blogs.

Not a bad draw for Lech. One of the better groups in fact.

According to PS Leo has put these players in the starting 11 so far Fabianski- Wasilewski, Zewlakow, Dudka, Krzynowek – ?, Lewandowski, Roger, Smolarek – ?,?. Seems obviously fake with Krzynowek in defense, no Blaszczykowski in RM, and no Brozek. Especially with the last two points, there really isnt a rivalry for Brozek in the starting 11. Lewandowski, and Sosin could have a rivalry but I’d prefer Lewandowski. No Blaszczykowski is just a joke, the squad revolves around him now so obviously hes playing.

I think everything nearly seems to be going Lech’s way this year. Although I feel they are slightly stronger and play more beautifully than Wisla. Wisla were fucked in almost every aspect of the draws this year. Beitar was one hell of a tough draw for a 2nd round qualifying round, then Barcelona (one of the top 5 clubs in the world) in the 3rd qualifying round, then fall into Uefa Cup figuring they could sneak into the group stage but draw a struggling but big Premiership side in Tottenham. Lech has the players and the ability, and the draws seem to be at the least a bit favorable. It was a great draw getting Nancy at home, CSKA would be rather difficult so them being away isn’t that bad, then it’d be nice to have Feyenoord or Deportivo at home, and they did indeed get Deportivo at home. although they are slightly struggling in the league, they are still a rather good Spanish side that shouldn’t be overlooked. the Feyenoord match away will be difficult, but regardless Lech actually have a decent chance of advancing in this group. all they need is 3rd out of 5 sides. there were definitely some tougher groups out there. yet again Lech dodged a bullet, good for them. if only Wisla were able to get that luck. but then again Wisla had the chance and opportunity to finish off Tottenham but managed to fuck that up

@dezerter
I think the performance was very good for a Polish team, especially a one that isn’t a Polish champion. At the same time, I haven’t watched any replays so my judgement may be blurred by enthusiastic Lech fans that sat around me and, well, some small amounts of alcohol (you realise that it was the day’s second game and it consisted an overtime, how many beers can that be?;)). Let’s wait for the group stage to make futher judgements.
@gregorio
I didn’t want to make a scapegoat out of Glowacki, but it just becomes annoying with him so often failing to perform in the most serious games. You’re right, I forgot about Franz who once again created a character driven team.
@Brian
Yeah, nobody will sack Skorza after this European campaign, but as you’ve written they had a chance to finish the Spurs off. Shame they didn’t do it. Wisla must always expect to draw tough opponents, it’s just how their UEFA coefficients look. As for Lech’s draw; they’ll be dangerous at home but may have huge problems away.

@Tomasz
don’t worry, i don’t look for excuses when it comes to my boys at Wisla… i was just trying to point out Lech were a bit more fortunate and i am jealous

I’m impressed by the fans of Lech Poznan and the 6-0 win over Grasshoppers. It’s definitely a team to take account with. Good luck in the Uefa Cup and have faith.
