“Kill The Referee” By Yves Hinant. Guess Who’s The Main Hero.

October 17th, 2009 | By: tomasz | 6 Comments »

A long time ago I wrote that the name Howard Webb won’t make it into this blog anymore. However, I think that the last year’s emotions are already gone and that the occassion is good to draw your attention to a particular film. “Kill The Referee” is a documentary about the referees flmed during the Euro 2008. As a result of the Austria-Poland game and all that followed Howard Webb became the natural hero of the project.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the film yet. It was shown during the Warsaw Film Festival and gained positive reviews from the people interested in the game (Rafal Stec, a football journalist who finished film theory studies, recommended it on his blog). I don’t know if it’s going to be available in cinemas around Poland, but hopefully I’ll get my hand on the DVD version sooner or later. I advise you to do the same. Check out the trailer.

That Austria call was one of the worst calls ever, they were just looking for anything to go Austria’s way.

I wish I could make out what Leo said when he was entering the locker room… I realize I am going to miss him as a coach too bad we have this circus going on around the NT and the players let him down. I agree the penalty call against Austria was incorrect, in my opinion b/c they let them take it twice and on the first kick Klienast shoved Bak, which was a foul. The side judge saw it and stopped play, but Webb simply talked to the players and let them retake the kick. It should have been a free kick for us where Klienast shoved Bak; I think Webb made the mistake of assuming the shoving was going both ways; the replays clearly show otherwise. But I guess it was fair in the end b/c Roger was clearly offside for our goal. If we would’ve scored the 3 goals we should have and not wasted our opportunities, the call wouldn’t have mattered. And death threats over a soccer match is a little bit much, some fans need to chill.

Kuba made a very good assist in Dortmund’s last win over Bochum

People wouldn’t hate Howard Webb so much if he didn’t have that Ross Kemp type jackass demeanour. Plus he looks like the guy too.

The Lech Poznan and Wisla Krakow match was exciting. The intensity was awesome. Back and forth action. A lot of chances created, a few missed chances but overall it was great. The pace of the game made the 90 minutes just fly by, that I like. Jasmine Buric looked solid. I think Lech have found a number one keeper. The combo of Glowacki and Marcelo are what Lewandowski needs to play against week in week out. Bravo to Robert for working hard and still managing to score. We need more Marcelo type players in the EK. The Zaglebie Lublin and Jagiellonia Białystok was also enjoyable to watch. No one would be complaining about the level of play if all the games were like this. It was nice to see Lech give 18 year old Mateusz Możdżeń a chance to play. The kid did not look out of place.

I think Blazej Augustyn played a full 90 today. Does anyone if Michal Miskiewicz made an appearance for Chievo yet?

Naturally, the fans reacted too harshly. In the end football is a sport and should not be life or death. Still, how can he ref big league games and International tournaments when he waits so long into a match to throw a yellow card for shirt pulling and pushing around? If he wanted to curb that behavior, he should’ve flashed the card earlier in the match, even if it would have gone against a Polish player. There were plenty of opportunities for him to do something, but he waited until the very end of the match. I can’t see how he was graded as having reffed that game appropriately. You have to take control in the first fifteen minutes. And for him to do it in a position where it helped Austria, in Austria, the guy has to have balls. He had to know someone would be screaming conspiracy. And in the end he gets to be a hero. This documentary undoubtedly paints him as a nice guy and a victim. Clearly there was no other choice but for him to issue a yellow card.

referees are human and everyone makes mistakes. Its that human element that makes the game unpredictable and interesting. Im sure we would not like to see instant replay implemented because that would slow the game down considerably. I dont know what to think anymore about the corruption in the sport so I take it for what it is and give them the benefit of the doubt. GO LECH POZNAN.
