History has been written!
When gray - haired Leo Benhaker has been appointed as national coach, he seemed to have more enemies than friends. However, he made a promise that he will deliver first successful qualification campaign in our history. Having promised to do so he almost set himself on mission impossible. We were down, beaten and upset after world cup and euro was always beyond our imagination, but we are there!!! History has been written again on saturday night in Chorzow. Two goals from Ebi Smolarek, our top scorer in qualification, sealed the victory over Belgium. However, it wasn’t as easy game as many expected. Huge expectations from fans gathered at the stadium brought nervousness that players hardly could overcome. Despite massive support from stands both sides were very poor offensively. One great save from polish goalkeeper Boruc seemed to be the only wrecking moment for supporters, but then Ebi Smolarek scored. In dying minutes of first have silly mistake from belgian right back proved to be costly and canny Smolarek scored probably one of the easiest goals in his career. Second goal was a combination of Kuba Blaszczykowski hard work on the right wing and Smolarek hunt for goals that night. Very average game secured three points and nothing had more value that night. Poland went out to streets to celebrate. Mediocre performance has been forgotten. Meanwhile, on the same day, Radoslaw Sobolewski, our anchorman, resigned from international football. Mystery of his decision can hardly explain as the player has not been speaking to press for years. Our last group game in Belgrad tonight is more than prestige game, it’s the first stage of preparation to forthcoming tournament. King Leo sent home five first team players in order to have a closer look on his second choice players. He will start with Lukasz Fabianski in goal ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak by now considered as goalkeeper number 2.
