Flashback: 1974

History: That’s what’s great about momentous occasions like the World Cup. Each góóóóóóóóóóóól we witness in the latest version of the tournament carries shadows from the past, yet is utterly original. Each golden shoe award recalls a dominant performance of the past, every save someone’s anguish from yesteryear.

In this entry, a flashback to World Cup 1974.

The cup holder when the dust settled in 1974 was the imperfect West Germany team (Wait a minute…the tourney’s in Germany this time…hmmm) but historically, this tournament would be noted for the coming out of an overnight sensation waiting to happen by the name of Grzegorz Lato. Lato finished the tournament with seven goals, a mark that would not be matched again until Ronaldo’s unbelievable 2002 performance – a few notable six-goalers turned in between Lato and Ronaldo include those by Paolo Rossi, Salvatore Schillaci and Davor Suker.

Going into the tournament, Lato was but one of “Gorski’s Eagles,” a bunch of mostly unknowns that would now longer be so beyond the Iron Curtain come autumn: players like Andrzej Szarmach, Robert Gadocha, Deyna “The General,” and Henryk Kasperczak.

Team Poland entered pool play in Group 4, a quartet that might earn the sobriquet “mini group of death” in the parlance of today’s football writing. Poland handled perpetual powerhouses Argentina and Italy, 3-2 and 2-1 respectively, to bookend their undefeated first round of play. Lato could hardly have started things off better for Team Polska, scoring on a breakaway in the seventh minute and then feeding Szarmach in the eighth to put the Argentines away early; Lato added his second and Poland’s third in the flurry of goals that was minutes 60-68. Against Italia, Kasperczak assisted both goals, helping Szarmach and the General once each. In between these impressive wins was a little stat-padding against first-timer Haiti: Szarmach netted a hat trick, Lota scored twice and Gadocha racked up a gaudy four assists in the 7-0 victory.

Under the rules of the old Cup format, Poland made up Group 2 with West Germany, Sweden and Yugoslavia. Gutsy games against Sweden (1-0) and Yugoslavia (2-1) both featured game-winning goals from Lato. Heading into what would be the game decider (and with the benefit of hindsight), bookmakers probably should have considered this one a pick ‘em. Excepting the brutal loss to East Germany in the first round, West Germany had found themselves playing to pre-tournament expectations (and there was that darned home-pitch advantage); Poland had already eliminated at least three legitimate contenders and seemed an unstoppable scoring machine.

Alas, it was not to be. A hard-fought tense contest was finally broken open by Gerd Müller in the 76th minute, and Polish dreams were dashed. Poland saved face in the often appropriately-named “consolation game,” with a Lato goal enough to give Poland the bronze in a 1-0 win over Brazil.

And for another four years, the statistics and stories were kicked around. Poland would not go far in the tournament in 1978. With Lato and Szarmach back in form, however, 1982 would be another Cup for the Poles to remember fondly…
