Final Call Ups For The Greece Friendly. Ireneusz Jelen Out For Two Months.

August 6th, 2009 | By: tomasz | 19 Comments »

Here’s the list of players that Leo Beenhakker chose for the Greece friendly.

Goalkeepers: Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow), Lukasz Zaluska (Celtic Glasgow)

Defenders: Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht), Jakub Rzezniczak (Legia Warsaw), Michal Zewlakow (Olympiakos Pireus), Tomasz Jodlowiec (Polonia Warsaw), Bartosz Bosacki (Lech Poznan), Marcin Komorowski (Legia Warsaw)

Midfielders: Dariusz Dudka (Auxerre), Mariusz Lewandowski (Shakhtar Donetsk), Jacek Krzynowek (Hannover 96), Rafal Murawski (Rubin Kazan), Roger Guerreiro (Legia Warsaw), Ludovic Obraniak (OSC Lille), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund), Wojciech Lobodzinski (Wisla Krakow), Euzebiusz Smolarek (Racing Santander), Jakub Wilk (Lech Poznan)

Strikers: Robert Lewandowski (Lech Poznan), Marek Saganowski (Southampton FC), Pawel Brozek (Wisla Krakow)

Backups: Sebastian Przyrowski (Polonia Warsaw), Piotr Polczak (Cracovia Krakow), Grzegorz Krychowiak (Girondins de Bordeaux), Pawel Golanski (Steaua Bukareszt), Lukasz Tralka (Polonia Warsaw), Tomasz Bandrowski (Lech Poznan), Lukasz Sosin (Anorthosis Famagusta), Slawomir Peszko (Lech Poznan)

So, we’ve got the twenty one chosen ones to play against Greece in the last friendly before the all important qualifiers. Worst of all, Ireneusz Jelen is not only out of this game, but he is also likely to miss the September matches. It is reported that Jelen is out for two months because of his latest injury. We’ve got one option less then as far as the positions of a striker and right winger are concerned. That’s a big shame as last season it was Jelen who turned out to be our most able goalscorer. Now we’re left with Robert Lewandowski and Pawel Brozek, though Marek Saganowski may be considered as well, especially for the game against Northern Ireland. Broziu is in poor shape at the moment and I think it is the more powerful Lewandowski who stands bigger chance to become our starting striker. We’ll know more about Leo’s plans after the game against Greece. What are other conclusions? I already touched upon the subject of our left back some time ago. Now it’s clear that Leo will choose between Marcin Komorowski and Jacek Krzynowek; Pawel Golanski is only on the backup list. I really hope Krzyniu can manage as I find it hard to believe in Komorowski, especially in the most important games of the year. Ludovic Obraniak’s performance against Greece should show if we still need Krzynek on the left wing. We also learnt that Jakub Rzezniczak is currently higher in the pecking order than Golanski. I think both of them are on a similar level, though I haven’t seen the Steaua defender in a long time (had Leo?). Wojciech Lobodzinski keeps his place in the team, he’s always been one of Leo’s favourites. I’m ok with that, as long as he doesn’t start the games, though, to be honest, I find Slawomir Peszko to be a much more useful player to the team. Finally, I don’t understand what was the call up for Grzegorz Krychowiak to prove. He wasn’t tested in the last friendlies, so I expected him to be included in the squad this time. Now he just remains a name on a sheet of paper. I remember that Krychowiak is only Bordeaux reserves player and he may not really deserve a place in the national team, but if he’d been called up in the first place I’d like to see him perform. Unless it’s only a gesture from Leo to show that he believes in the player or to somehow strengthen his position at Bordeaux (which doesn’t seem to be working). What do you expect to learn from the game against Greece?

Ps: Lukasz Fabianski is out of the squad because of his latest injury.

thank God at least Obraniak is on the list. I don’t want to overly hype him or anything but I”m really excited to see what he can do. I just don’t understand why Leo has this obsession with only playing one striker up top at times. It never seems to work for us. Isn’t Smolarek considered a striker in Leo’s book? He’s gonna have to play there if he wants to get on the field. And is Dudka not going to be playing in the central defence anymore?

I find it hard to believe that Obraniak would lose a rivalry with Krzynowek, no offense to Krzynek but his best days are behind him. Actually I’m not even sure that they’re competing with each other. Obraniak says his preferred position is as central midfielder.

Jelen – I kind of figured that either Jelen or Blaszczykowski would get an injury… it just doesn’t seem possible for us to ever assemble all our best players in one match.

The defense really worries me, I hope Jodlowiec can step us and put pressure on Bosacki (I really hope Beenhakker has laid to rest the Dudka as CB experiment…) It’s a shame that Blazej Augustyn joined a club with three other excellent center-backs because reports coming from Italy state that he’s looked very impressive himself. He will probably debut in Serie A at some point this season but will probably have to wait a while. Still, the reports are exciting. A few days ago he played half-matches against Fiorentina and Cagliari, both Serie A clubs, and earned glowing reviews.

Krychowiak – I’m surprised that he still hasn’t managed to arrange a loan move.. If no Ligue 2 sides want to take him, then surely he could find a club in Poland. He’s not going to learn much spending another season in reserves.

Janczyk was on the bench for Lokeren but didn’t come on. It’s rumored that he’s now their 4th choice striker but I haven’t been able to find out why he’s suddenly lost favor… CSKA Moscow should recall him and loan him out to another club. There’s no sense in warming the bench at some shitty Belgian club.

Hopefully Jelen has a quick recovery. Defense does look a little shaky, but they shouldn’t be under too much pressure if Greece plays their usual style unless we keep losing passes, so maybe they will have time to settle in. With the amount of “strikers” listed, it’ll probably be a 4-5-1. Lewandowski is good but, its going to be lonely up there in attack if Greece sits back in defense all day.

Thats really too bad about Jelen, why do some of our most in-form players seem to be made of glass? The defenders list worries me, they are either old or unproven. If Dudka is in fact going to start being played as a midfielder again, that creates an excess of central mids. Personally I like Lewandowski at DM and Murawski as a central mid.

I agree about Janczyk…just when he was getting the spotlight again, he is back to warming the bench, and now for an even lesser team! I hope he saves his career before its too late, as its going backwards now it seems.

Too bad about Jelen, but at least we have other decent strikers who can replace him. I too am confused with the 4-5-1 formation, why doesn’t Leo at least experiment with 4-4-2?

Oh, and all the Europe League matches are done, I have to say that I am not surprised with Polonia being eliminated, nice to see them score an away goal. Lech advanced easily, even though they lost 2-1 at home, all thanks to their blowout in Norway. But Legia, wow, this for me is a disappointment! I was expecting to see them advance to the playoff round.

Does anybody know how Piszczek is doing? I thought last year he was a starting defender for Hertha Berlin. With our defensive problems why isn’t Leo taking a look at him.
Now the ekstraklasa has one team left in the Europa league, how pathetic.
No wonder we look for saviors like Roger or Obraniak.

Too bad for Legia. I saw the highlights at half time and could only catch the first several minutes of the second half while at work. Legia were controlling the game from what I saw, and really missed netting one in the first half on that melee of shots so close to the Brøndby net. Why so many missed chances against European competition? Legia and the humiliation of Wisla. In the Ekstraklasa this week, that didn’t happen according the highlights, …many sweet goals and considering comments of MarcinO a couple post back about a good flow to the EK games — there were several fine goals, decisive even with tough angle shots to the far post and two great set piece shots. Just seems that the guys in European competition are thinking too much, tentative in front, sometimes looking for someone else to finish.

I is listed as a MF (right side) but also plays right back. I think the Bundeslinga starts today and tomorrow Hertha Berlin plays Hannover 96. Hope we hear more about him soon and this year.

I don’t think anyone really expected anything out of Polonia Warszawa. Good experience for national team hopefuls like Jodłowiec.

That Legia match could have gone either way. I felt they were the superior side throughout the match. They just failed to capitalize on the numerous chances they had. It was just one of those games.

I was a little disappointed with Lech Poznan. Considering the result of the previous fixture, a win should have been a given. I felt they lacked discipline. If they hope to proceed further in the competition they have to approach every game from a professional stand point and build momentum. Consistency is key. They have to put forth a consistent effort. That is what separates the good teams from the great teams. They still have not earned enough respect to play like they did. They have to approach each game like its their last. That kind of mentality will eliminate those “bad games.” It worked quite well last season playing with their backs against the wall.

Bartosz Bosacki is out due to injury, Krychowiak has been called up instead. I think it’s great that younger players are getting a chance to at least participate in the training camp but it’s a bit embarrassing that it’s a player who’s not even close to debuting for his club… Krychowiak only participated in the first week of Bordeaux’ pre-season, then got dropped to the reserve team and was not named in Bordeaux’s extended 26-player first team:
http://www.girondins.com/matches/encyclopedie/equipes/2010/11.shtml
If he goes on loan to a club where he’ll play regularly then I would have no objection to calling him up but there’s no hint of that!

It would have made more sense to call up Blazej Augustyn. He has played in every one of Catania’s pre-season games, including Fiorentina, Calgiari, Besiktas and Utrecht (and received a lot of praise). While it’s unlikely he’ll be a starter for Catania, at least he’s knocking on the door.

Kamil Glik should also be ahead of Krychowiak, even though Piast have had a bad start to the season.

- Radoslaw Majewski, 90 minutes in Nottingham Forest’s 0-0 draw vs. Reading in the Championship. OK reviews, apparently he showed potential but hasn’t completely adapted yet to the pace of the English game.

- Dariusz Dudka – 45 minutes for Auxerre in Ligue 1. Mixed, mostly negative reviews: too slow and invisible apparently.

- Blaszczykowski – 70 minutes for Borussia Dortmund

- Piszczek – 54 minutes for Hertha

- Michal Janota, 90 minutes for Excelsior in Dutch 2nd division

- Bartosz Salamon – starting for Brescia in Coppa Italia

- Brozek hasn’t scored yet this season, however, Robert Lewandowski seems to be in great form.

Apparently Janczyk didn’t even make the bench this time… very strange. He did pretty well last season, and a few weeks ago Anderlecht tried to sign him from Moscow, now suddenly he’s not good enough to make shitty Lokeren’s bench?
