Call Ups For The North American Tour. Serie C Good Enough To Play For Poland.

Bartosz_Salamon_Fot_Aldo_3119002Bartosz Salamon is the only new player who was called up from abroad by Franz Smuda for the games against the USA and Ecuador. That’s a huge surprise as his career has been going downwards lately. Instead of playing in Serie A for his club Brescia he was loaned out to play in Serie C for Foggia. Apart from that, Radosław Majewski will get another chance from Smuda.

Here are the call ups from foreign clubs:
Goalkeepers: Artur Boruc (AC Fiorentina)|, Przemysław Tytoń (Roda JC Kerkrade)
Defenders: Łukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund), Kamil Glik (Palermo), Michał Żewłakow (Ankaragucu)
Midfielders: Rafał Murawski (Rubin Kazań), Bartosz Salamon (US Foggia), Jakub Błaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund), Adam Matuszczyk (1 FC Koeln), Ludovic Obraniak (Lille OSC), Radosław Majewski (Nottingham Forest)
Strikers: Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund), Ireneusz Jeleń (AJ Auxerre)

I find it a sad fact that the 3rd division, even if it’s Italian Serie C, is a good enough level to earn you a call up to the national team. We’ve all heard here about Salamon, been scouting his progress and would have been happy if he really deserved the place in the national team. Unfortunately, instead of getting better and better, playing more and more he’s been making huge steps backwards lately. He won himself a place in Brescia’s lineup in the 20089 season at the age of 17. He managed to put in eleven performances in the aforementioned season. The next one was to be better, but because of little known reasons (lack of form? misbehaviour?) he was excluded from the team after only four games. This season, after Brescia advanced to Serie A, Salamon was judged not good enough to represent the club at the top level and was loaned out to Foggia. I don’t know how he performs there and I sense that neither does our coaching staff. Here’s how Smuda’s assistant coach Hubert Małowiejski explains the call up for Salamon: I watched him two weeks ago in the youth team’s victory over Italy. He’s a central midfielder, very promising. In spite of young age, he’s already played numerous games for Brescia in Serie B. Franz knows him from his work in Lech Poznań. Salamon was sixteen then. It’s worthwhile to check him in the national team. I’m not saying that it’s not worthwhile, but I find it strange that players aren’t called up according to their current ability. Will Salamon make a switch to Serie A next year and prove good enough to represent us at Euros? It would be a perfect scenario, but not very plausible at the moment. However, one good thing that may result from this call up is that Brescia takes notice. After all, they now have a Polish senior national team player in their squad.

Radosław Majewski returns to the team; that’s a very positive outcome of the latest alcohol scandal in our team. As Maciej ‘the Donut’ Iwański was excluded from the team, Smuda had to find another plamaker able to cover for Ludo Obraniak. Step in Majewski, who I find a much more talented and hard working player than Iwański. Apart from that, Sebastian Boenisch and Arkadiusz Głowacki couldn’t have been picked due to injuries. Nevertheless, Smuda refrained from including Dariusz Dudka in the squad, a sign that shows that only a real fitness catastrophe will bring back the Auxerre fringe player to the national team.

I’m glad Majewski is back but still disappointed that Iwanski ever started ahead of Raddy.

I’ve been reading this blog for some time now, but this is my first post. I must say that although I’m eager to see how Salamon does playing for the senior team, I doubt this was the time to reward him. Serie C? Come on. I hope he does very well and is a bit of a revelation. Maybe this will jump start him on a path to a better league/team. He does play for Foggia though, and with their coach’s tactics (all offence all the time), he should score a couple of goals this season. As for Radek, he should have been there earlier. Iwanski and some of the other Ekstraklasa stiffs are not Kadra material. I also hope that Krychowiak has a good year for Reims and continues to progress.
PS – Janota and Majewski both scored for their respective teams this round. I believe they both got their 1st of the season, so maybe it will get them going.
PS#2 – What the hell is going on with Janczyk?! He was so promising last year, and now he’s invisible. I would love some clarification on this issue if anyone knows anything.

BTW, it’s nice to see that there is a place to chat and ask questions regarding Polish footy. I look forward to talking to the regular contributors in the future.

Tix for the Montreal match are on sale on admission.com.
$31 plus fees. General admission, so it should be easy to form a Polish section, though Montreal has a high Latino population too. However I bet there will be Poles driving from as far as Toronto, which is doubtful for the Ecuadorian fans, I might be wrong though.

Can’t wait!!!

Last season, the main reason Salamon lost his place at Brescia was because he returned from some youth tournament out of shape and they were really annoyed about that.

This season he’s played in the starting lineup for Foggia every time, except when he was in Poland for a youth tournament. From Google Translate, it appears he’s had one bad game but was very good in the other games. The talent that attracted Napoli’s interest a couple years ago is still there. So I won’t complain about Smuda calling him up. Better Salamon than an EK player.

Krychowiak should also have gotten a chance, especially since he has a bit of experience at centerback and seems quite big and imposing. It’s true that he rarely plays there but our shortage of defenders is so bad that I would have at least liked to see him tested out. He can’t be worse than Glik. And it’s clear Krychowiak won’t lose his place in Reims’ starting line up.

Cywka on the other hand seems to have been dropped after a bad performance. Now is not the right to call him up but I hope he wins back his place.

Marty, apparently Janczyk was overweight and out of shape at the start of the season. It appears the manager is still angry about that and has kind of given up on him. Janczyk says he’s been working hard but it looks like it’ll be very difficult to persuade the manager to give him another chance.

Reposting my thoughts on that article,

I think the article completely misses the point. Wenger’s goalkeeper development policy is a colossal failure. He has never managed to bring through a young keeper and Fabianski is simply a disaster. It’s about time he re-evaluated his policies. The lack of playing time for young keepers is clearly at the root of why they look so indecisive and inexperienced when called upon. Yet Wenger continues to put his head in the sand.

Wenger doesn’t even acknowledge why Szczesny is upset. He wanted to seek playing time at another club on loan but was ordered to stay at Arsenal as FOURTH choice. Wenger admits that even Mannone is still ahead of Szczesny.

Fabianski has been second choice for the last couple of years and has been clearly damaged by the limited playing time. How much playing time will Szczesny get as fourth choice? Virtually zero. How does Wenger expect him to improve? Why does he refuse to admit that his policy is very flawed and that Fabianski is the direct victim?

Basically, Wenger refuses to own up to his mistakes and expects Szczesny to be a complete idiot and not notice what has happened to Fabianski.

In my opinion, I’m happy Salamon was called up. His career has been going downhill and this call-up could be the staff’s way of telling him to get his head in the game and to work harder like he did for Bresia.

I think he has been working hard for Foggia. It was Brescia that was annoyed with him.

Hieronim – we well be in the same section at Soldier Field. Hope to see you there. We shouldn’t have much trouble meeting if you ask around row 3 or visa versa if i step up and ask around for you.

Man if only we convinced Filipe Luis Kasmirski to play for us. He is so dangerous going foward and solid defensively, and now with Boenisch out for 6 months, we’re back to scraping the bottom of the barrel for LB again.

Also Dortmund are playing amazing so far but as a result of Mario Gotze impressing lately, Kuba has lost his starting 11 spot. He seems to always alternate games with Gotze or come on at half time. Piszczek also seems to rotate in his position and Lewy is used as a super sub but in an attacking central midfield position which really isn’t his perfered position. Can’t complain too much because there are plenty of games to go around between the league, cup, and europa league but Kuba losing his starting spot makes it seem like the whole NT is made up of bench players(excluding shitty EK players).

yah Gotze is really coming on strong at Dortmund. They have such a talented squad this year it’s really deep and youthful.
