Call Ups For The First World Cup Qualifiers. Pawel Brozek Is Back.

August 26th, 2008 | By: tomasz | 9 Comments »

Leo Beenhakker presented today a list of players that will compete for Poland in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and San Marino. As expected, Artur Boruc, Dariusz Dudka and Radoslaw Majewski were not included after their alcohol adventures in Ukraine. The biggest news is the call up for the Polish league’s top goalscorer Pawel Brozek.

The call ups for Slovenia and San Marino games:

Goalkeepers: Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal London), Wojciech Kowalewski (Iraklis Thessaloniki), Lukasz Zaluska (Dundee United)

Defenders: Maciej Kowalczyk (Dinamo Moscow), Mariusz Jop (FC Moscow), Seweryn Gancarczyk (Metalist Kharkiv), Michal Zewlakow (Olympiakos Pireus), Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht Brussels), Grzegorz Wojtkowiak (Lech Poznan), Piotr Polczak (Cracovia Krakow), Bartosz Bosacki (Lech Poznan)

Midfielders: Mariusz Lewandowski (Shakhtar Donetsk), Jacek Krzynowek (VfL Wolfsburg), Roger Guerreiro (Legia Warsaw), Rafal Boguski, Wojciech Lobodzinski (both Wisla Krakow), Tomasz Bandrowski, Rafal Murawski (both Lech Poznan), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund)

Attackers: Pawel Brozek (Wisła Krakow), Robert Lewandowski (Lech Poznan), Euzebiusz Smolarek (Racing Santander), Lukasz Piszczek (Hertha Berlin)

Backups: Sebastian Przyrowski (Polonia Warsaw), Adam Kokoszka (Empoli), Michal Pazdan, Tomasz Zahorski (both Gornik Zabrze), Slawomir Peszko (Lech Poznan)

Let’s carry out a little analysys, shall we.

Goalies: No Artur Boruc, which was clear after the news about heavy drinking came out. Lukasz Fabianski is clearly our nr 1 now and will have to fill Artie’s shoes for the next two games at least. I’m confident he’ll do well. This is the first call up for Zaluska, a rather unexpected one. The Dundee United keeper is receiving great reviews for his performances in SPL so he should do as a backup keeper. He was always nr 2 for Korona Kielce in Poland but his career flourished after moving to Scotland. The call up for Kowalewski is also rather surprising, especially that the season in Greece is yet to start. It just shows that Leo doesn’t trust goalies from the Polish league like Przyrowski or Pawelek. Oh, no call up for Kuszczak, but that’s hardly a surprise for anybody.

Defenders: We’re in deep shit when it comes to full backs. Bronowicki and Golanski are injured and Wawrzyniak is completely out of form. Therefore, Wasilewski is the only player with some sort of international experience. Wojtkowiak should act as his backup; he does well in the league and is a former member of our youth teams. The left flank is more problematic; Leo will choose here between Kowalczyk (1 cap) and Gancarczyk (3 caps). The inclusion of the latter is especially surprising as Leo often stated that the Metalist player is not what he is looking for. Gancarczyk’s call up only shows that Leo is really determined to find any kind of moderate player for the left back spot. This is a chance for both players to earn their place in the team for little longer. Michal Zewlakow’s position in the starting lineup is certain, the question is who will partner him in the central defence? Jop returns to the team, but I’m far from calling him a player we can always count on. It’s the first call up for Bosacki since 2006; he’s doing great for Lech Poznan this season and may be the answer Leo is looking for. I like the decision to include him, he’s quite fast for a defender and can score a goal or two from corners (as we all know). Polczak apparently impressed Leo during training camps and may also start next to Zewlakow. Kokoszka blew his chances with a horrible performance against Ukraine.

Midfielders: Who will fill Dariusz Dudka’s spot? Seems like Rafal Murawski will get a chance to step up and establish a strong position in the national team. Roger is a bit too offensive a player and Bandrowski doesn’t seem experienced enough. Kuba Blaszczykowski is sure to start on the right wing, whereas we can’t be certain about the left flank. Krzynowek doesn’t even make the bench for Wolfsburg these days so maybe it’s time to give Rafal Boguski a chance? He’s practically new to the team (1 cap), but he already proved in Wisla’s European games that he can make the step up to the international level. There is always a possibility that Ebi Smolarek will play as a winger.

Attackers: If this is not the time for Pawel Brozek to become our main striking force then there will never be one. Brozek has a great start of the season, he’s in great shape. Hey, he even played quite well against Barcelona. It should be his time in the national team, now or never. What’s more, Irek Jelen didn’t get a call up after a disappointing performance against Ukraine so the doors are open for Brozek to start. Leo prefers Ebi Smolarek to play on the wing, whereas Piszczek plays on the wing for Hertha. Robert Lewandowski is too inexpierenced, but I count on him to come off the bench at least in one of the games. The situation is perfect for Brozek to earn a place in the starting lineup; time to prove he’s what we need upfront. If he’s not an answer then we’re left with no options left (and don’t tell me Janczyk is ready, his biggest success this season is making the bench for CSKA). Finally, I think we can slowly consider Maciej Zurawski a former national team player. Still, I wish him the best of look in Greece this season.

Bear in mind that this analysys applies provided we use our 4-2-3-1 tactics. I wonder if Leo has any new ideas up his sleeve.

Sure, is now or never for Brozek, as it will be easy against San Marino to perform. But it will be a surprise, a good surprise, but a surprise if he will perform against Slovenia. Smolarek has been allways a better winger than a striker, and a lot better winger than a lone striker. So Strikers are still our biggest problem. Don’t talk me anymore about Zurawaski, he was a great player, but actually he can’t play for no one of the English,Spanish, Italian, German, France or other major league team, so I won’t understand that kind of move. I repeat that Leo have to give a chance to a player like Wichniarek, never mind the past, never mind if it is only for a few matchs. This player perform well in a poor team in high level league, no one of our actually players of NT do that…

I like teh new faces in leo’s team, namely lewandowski, bosacki, boguski. bosy is realiable, i believe in him to help as the last resort in the critical moment. the other two young guys can bring much speed and flair to our play and we need it desperatley after euro. still, i didn’t think lewandowski would make the nt so quick. he’s our chance for a big time football star, so young, so counted on, and so unfailing (so far).

brożek finally is called up as a hope for the team. he should get quite much of a game, not just tested to be dropped. now i count on him though i used to take him for a failure.

i don’t believe in gancarczyk. leo already said he’s not good enough, and seweryn hasn’t impressed lately (or has he??), so we really are in a deep shit. anyway the left back for the two games will be a rookie in the nt.

Why does everyone give shit to Gancarczyk? He’s arguably the best LB in Ukraine and last season Celtic was looking into buying him, I don’t see why Leo doesn’t like him so much even though he never even played him in a match.

Bosacki is a good idea, he’s quite experienced and certainly more reliable than Jop. Leo admitted that this is Brozek’s time, he just added “I hope I’m not wrong”. Everything suggests that Brozek will start against Slovenia. Gancarczyk? He did well in his debut for the national team and then had 2 poor games. I know that he’s considered the best left back in Ukraine, but shouldn’t he already be captured by the likes of Dinamo, Shakhtar or some top Russian club? He didn’t pass trials at Celtic which also isn’t something to be proud of (the sole fact that he had to undergo trials shows that he’s not that respected). Leo already said a couple of times that he’s not a player that would strengthen the team. Now he’s calling him up as a last resort.

i remember gancarczyk only from the games under janosik. he had good crosses but was rather raw otherwise. maybe he isn’t that bad at all, but the attitude leo has for him is worrying - he took him even though he doesn’t think highly of him. that’s why i wrote we’re busted in this respect.

I’m sorry But if we even consider playing Wasilewski i think i will throw myself into i lion pit after bathing in blood, that guy is complete shit and was by far the worst player at the euros, and to play him because he has international experience is just a joke. I would much prefer it if we gave a youngster a chance instead someone with no international experience, all this talk of international experience is just a joke how much “international experience” did Pele have when he played in the worldcup finals for brazil? now dont get me wrong i’m not saying we have a Pele in our midst but if Brazil had the attitude 50 years ago that we still have today then Pele might not have made an apparence untill he was about 25… which is exactly what is happening to Janczyk, and the excuse he’s not playing regularly has no value here, because neither is Smolarek and neither is Krzynowek so why do they start? oh let me guess “international experience!”

I think I might be the only one who would be not too pissed off with Wasilewski in there at RB.

I think he does fairly well pushing up the ball, he is plenty aggressive. And does half way decent keeping up with the speed of the game. I think he is perfect against methodical type attacks.

Honestly the only problem I have with him is that he just simply loses his mind and composure out there, about once every two games (at least nationally).

First of all, I think Golanski is better than Wasyl, but he’s currently injured. As for Wasyl, he does well against average opposition, his weaknesses are only exposed when we meet a team of higher quality. That’s why he plays in Belgium and not Premiership for which he’s physically suited. Come to think of it, we may as well start with Kowalczyk as a RB and Gancarczyk as a LB.
