Breaking News: Poland’s Euro 2008 Squad, First Draft.

April 16th, 2008 | By: tomasz | 5 Comments »

leo-smoking.jpgAs planned earlier Leo Beenhakker announced today an initial squad for the upcoming Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. Who can already book their holidays for June? Whose dreams are shattered? Which players will experience suicidal thoughts? Are there any surprises? Who has just choked on his bagel while reading the list? What is the meaning of life? Have a look.

Without further suspension here’s the thirty-one! men squad for the Euros:

Goalkeepers: Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow), Tomasz Kuszczak (Manchester United), Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal London), Wojciech Kowalewski (Kolporter Korona Kielce)

Defenders: Jacek Bak, Arkadiusz Radomski (both Austria Vienna), Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht Brussels), Pawel Golanski (Steaua Bucharest), Mariusz Jop (FC Moscow), Adam Kokoszka (Wisla Cracow), Jakub Wawrzyniak (Legia Warsaw), Michal Zewlakow (Olympiakos Pireus), Grzegorz Bronowicki (Red Star Belgrade)

Midfielders: Dariusz Dudka, Wojciech Lobodzinski (both Wisla Cracow), Jakub Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund), Mariusz Lewandowski (Shachtar Donieck), Rafal Murawski (Lech Poznan), Lukasz Gargula (PGE GKS Belchatow), Jacek Krzynowek (VfL Wolfsburg), Euzebiusz Smolarek (Racing Santander), Radoslaw Majewski (Groclin Grodzisk Wlkp.), Michal Golinski (Zaglebie Lubin), Michal Pazdan (Gornik Zabrze)

Attackers: Maciej Zurawski (AE Larissa), Tomasz Zahorski (Gornik Zabrze), Radoslaw Matusiak (Wisla Cracow), Lukasz Piszczek (Hertha Berlin), Marek Saganowski (FC Southampton), Artur Wichniarek (Arminia Bielefeld), Dawid Janczyk (CSKA Moscow)

Just a few quick thoughts as I have to leave for my classes. Biggest surprise? The inclusion of Marek Saganowski and Artur Wichniarek. Biggest absences? No huge surprises but Pawel Brozek and Marek Zienczuk from Wisla will be left disappointed with the outcome. The player that I pity the most? Kamil Grosicki as I think he’d add some extra dribbling abilities to the squad. Roger isn’t included as he’s still to receive the Polish citizenship. I’ll write more about Leo’s decisions later today. Oh, and for the meaning of life; it’s football of course.
