Bogus, Dude(k)!
Well, as the below post by Mr. Bob shows, the 23-man Team Poland roster has been announced.
Poor Jerzy Dudek. First, Liverpool relegated him to collect dust on the sidelines. Then Polska’s immortal goalie Jan Tomaszewski questioned Dudek’s testosterone count. And now this…The goalkeeper isn’t even going to keep the bench warm in Germany next month (as has been the 33-year-old’s typical station in Liverpool this season); instead, he’ll be checking out the matches safe at home.
Though media has called the absence of Dudek a “shock omission,” it ain’t necessarily so. With five genuine keepers contending for three spots, it had long been suspected that enthusiastic homeland favorite 21-year-old Lukas Fabianski (Legia Warsaw) would earn his first honest-to-Pele cap (Fabianski has appeared in two friendlies at the national level) with Coach Janas’ team. Plus, there’s always Dudek’s “performance” in the last Cup to remind Janas’ detractors.
Other “notable omissions” include the three Tomaszes: striker Frankowski (Wolverhampton), former team captain Klos and top scorer Rzasa. Substituted for these guys were Pawel Brozek (one of four team members from Wisla Krakow), Dariusz Dudka (Wisla Krakow) and Piotr Giza (Cracovia).
Clearly, Janas is trying to shake up the team a little; good on him, too. Last year’s embarrassment in the Cup was often blamed on the complacency (and, in some cases, sheer age) of that team’s veterans. Janas has infused a few kielbasas’ worth of newbies into the scheme in an effort to mold this team to his liking. Indeed, former national teamer and Celtic player Dariusz Dziekanowski stated to Reuters that Polish citizens were “shocked,” saying that perhaps it was “a good thing that Janas is stamping his authority on the team … the trainer has to take responsibility and he is certainly taking it.”
One particular advantage/disadvantage to pay attention to is the relatively unknown quality of most of Team Poland’s roster. Just check out the defenders. After Dudka are Marcin Baszczynski, Michal Zewlakow, Jacek Bak, Seweryn Gancarczyk, Mariusz Jop and Mariusz Lewandowski. Baszczynski plays for Wisla Krakow, Zewlakow for Anderlecht in Belgium. The others play in leagues in Qatar, Ukraine, Russia and Ukraine, respectively. Few spectators will go in with much hard currency on these guys.
Janas, meanwhile, conservatively played a media speculative about other shifts the coach would make: “I am not ruling anything out at this point. We still have almost four weeks until the first game. This squad has some youth, some experience and hopefully we can make a strong team from it starting now.”
And somewhere Dudek still sits in shock at what has transpired…

Right you are. Janas knows he will be the first one thrown to the dogs if this team doesn’t perform. His decision shows that he won’t be happy with the status quo…that or he’s made the biggest mistake, but that remains to be seen and I highly doubt it. I’m very happy to see Fabiański and Boruc go. The only thing I’m worried about with the young Legia keeper is him being intimidated at the world’s bigest sporting event. If this is the case, Boruc should be able to to do the job anyway. I don’t know much about the third keeper, Kuszczak, can anyone bring me up to speed?
Overall, yesterday for the first time in a while I was really impressed by Janas. Biało-Czerwoni do boju!

What did Tomaszewski mean when he was questioned Dudek’s hormone count?

Beatroot,
The quote was:
“Jerzy Dudek should act like a man and give up all thought of being on the national squad.”
If there’s any extra meaning there, it’s probably that Tomaszewski wishes he could proclaim himself the greatest Polish goalkeeper ever and wants no interference from a chap like Dudek.

I love Poland but, let’s face it, this year’s sqaud is weak. I adore Dudek, and I was sad to learn that he won’t be playing. This is a crap-shoot and if Janas fails Poland is going to be looking for a new coach- again.
If Boruc can handle the goal then Poland should make it out of the group. The defense has gotten better and I think they’ve learned their lesson. Remember 2002? That was 4 goals in like 15 minutes. What a disgrace that was. This year, Biało-Czerwoni do boju, like Adas says.

But you can’t play a goalkeeper - especially as tempremental a one as Dudek - who has not played first team football all season.
I’m sad too, but the Dude’s days are over.

I think everyone is forgetting someone when they talk about or GKs…Fabiański! I don’t think people realize the potential here. I’ve watched games where he’s played and he is goooood. He just recently helped Legia become Polish champions. I’m telling you, watch for him to stand out on that team.
HOWEVER, what we are all forgetting here is that goalies don’t score goals…and teams that don’t score goals don’t win games. Having 4 goals scored on us in 15 minutes is one thing, but not scoring any in 2 out of 3 games is another. There is WAY too much concentration on our golaies and way too little on our goal scorers. And that is what I believe will be our downfall…yeat again.

Dudek did ok for Poland in the qualifications, no doubt about it. No blunders, good in the air, made some quality saves (vs Austria in Vienna, or vs England in Chorzow).
The question arises, however, how could janas take him and leave him on the bench? What for? Boruc, Kuszczak are all good enough and played regularly at the club level.
Young Fabianski is going to learn sth from his older teammates which will help him improve his skills (im sure about it).
Ania wrote that this year’s polish team is weak. I dont share this point of view for obvious reasons. They are no world beaters but they’ve already showed that they can play some good football (the last match against England at Old Trafford doesnt mean anything: England have always been among the main contenders to win the cup) and if they stay focused on the goal (going out of the group) they will do it . Are Costarica or Ecuador better than us? I doubt it.
However, our problem is that we lack “squad depth”- if szymkowiak gets injured, there will be no decent replacement( Mila? Lewandowski:)), Rasiak isnt a striker who can perform vs good teams….and many, many more.
I hope we dont get crushed by the Germans who are expected to win the group (0:0 would be quite an achievement, I’d say).
